Santa Margherita lies on the right bank of the Torrente Staffora at 800 metres above sea level. The village is situated almost steeply above the Valle Staffora and offers beautiful views across the valley. Paved lanes and stone houses give Santa Margherita a distinctive appearance that is best explored on foot. Those looking for a place with landscapes, established architecture and cultural and historical points of interest for their trip to Italy will find several different ways to explore the surrounding area here.

Church, Castle and Village Character

The village is home to the ruins of the castle of the Malaspina marquises. They are among Santa Margherita's prominent historical features and complement the impression created by the old lanes and stone houses. The Church of Santa Margherita stands at the highest point of the village. It was completed between 1523 and 1595. The Chiesa di S. Margherita has a single-nave layout and two side chapels on each side.

Smaller architectural details also deserve attention. The permanent nativity scene was created by renovating an old stable and uses figures made from marble dust. This old stable also contains a stone arch dating from the 18th century. The nativity scene is directly accessible from the road leading to the historic centre of Massinigo.

Museums and Regional History

The Ecomuseo Il grano in erba is connected with the municipalities of Santa Margherita Staffora, Brallo di Pregola, Menconico and Romagnese (PV). Its focus is on historic routes such as the Via del Sale, which can be explored on foot. This makes it possible to experience the landscape not only as a view, but also through its traditional connections and paths.

The Museo del Salumiere was created to preserve and pass on knowledge about the production of Salame di Varzi. In the museum, a butcher's shop is arranged as it looked in the 1930s. Another historical feature is the Roman kiln complex at Massinigo: it is one of the best-preserved Roman kiln complexes in Lombardy and is so far the only one documented in the Oltrepò Pavese.

Hiking on Historic Trails

The Sentiero dei Brignati is an approximately 5-kilometre-long hiking trail connecting the villages of Brallo and Fego. Its route passes through a small settlement and descends along a mule track to the Bosco dei Giganti, a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees. This provides a manageable trail length for your planning, while combining landscape, traditional route design and old-growth trees.

Another circular route is the Giro ad anello lungo la Via del Sale. It starts and ends in Santa Margherita di Staffora (PV). Together with the historic routes of the Ecomuseo Il grano in erba, this circular route offers an opportunity to explore Santa Margherita and the surrounding themes over longer walking sections. The historic carnival of Cegni is celebrated twice a year, adding a recurring tradition to the area's cultural profile.
