Historical Traces and Sacred Art
Somma Lombardo combines fortress and religious history, aviation, and a tour of water-management facilities.
Castello Visconti di San Vito was built in the 13th century as a defensive fortress. The building thus provides a tangible introduction to medieval military architecture.
Castello Visconti di San Vito also preserves an important fresco cycle from the late Mannerist school. Alongside its original function as a fortress, the surviving paintings are therefore also a central focus here.
The history of the Basilica Minore di Sant’Agnese begins in the 9th century with the construction of an old oratory dedicated to San Fede. Behind the altar is a 17th-century altarpiece dedicated to the martyrdom of Saint Agnes, attributed to Carlo Cane.
In the Santuario della Madonna della Ghianda, the apse contains the 15th-century fresco “L’albero genealogico di Cristo”, attributed to the Late Gothic painter Michelino da Besozzo. The work expands the religious focus with an example of Late Gothic painting.
The Chiesa di San Rocco also has a complex building history: it was built from 1576 onwards over an existing rural chapel dating from 1529 and dedicated to San Rocco.
In its apse, the Chiesa di San Rocco preserves a “Crucifixion” from the school of Caravaggio. In Somma Lombardo, sacred art thus ranges from the 15th-century fresco in the Santuario to the “Crucifixion” from the school of Caravaggio in the Chiesa di San Rocco.
Aviation and Water Management
Volandia extends across the historic buildings of the Officine Aeronautiche Caproni, founded in 1910. The museum is Italy’s largest aviation museum and one of the most important in Europe.
The tour of Panperduto lasts 90 minutes and follows a route of approximately 1.2 kilometres to the intake structures, the weir, the fish ladder, the Museum of Italian-Swiss Waters, the overflow and the canal intake. The sequence combines technical facilities with the history and function of the waterways.
The tour of Panperduto follows an easy, almost entirely flat route with some steps and gentle inclines.
A Longer Route through Parco del Ticino
Along its route of more than 100 kilometres, the Sentiero E1 passes through Parco del Ticino directly via Somma Lombardo. The Sentiero E1 therefore forms a longer route through Somma Lombardo; the tour of Panperduto, by contrast, has a set duration and route.
Castello Visconti di San Vito offered paid tours on Sundays from April to October.
