Cagli: Cultural Sites, Festivals and Mountain Landscapes

Cagli can be explored through its historic cultural sites and distinctive landscapes. In the city center, the Museo Civico Archeologico e della Via Flaminia di Cagli is housed in the Palazzo Pubblico. The area includes Monte Catria, Monte Nerone and the high plateau of Monte Petrano, as well as wooded areas, mountain ridges and gorges carved by rivers.

Culture in the Historic Cityscape

At the museum, the installation “In Viaggio con i Guerrieri di Cagli” features touchable resin replicas of the twelve warriors from the “stipe di Coltona”. The museum is architecturally accessible to all visitors. The Teatro Comunale di Cagli was inaugurated in 1878 with the opera “Il Violino del Diavolo”. The Centro per la Scultura Contemporanea di Cagli is housed in the ancient Torrione.

The Torrione Martiniano was designed in 1481 by the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The Ponte Mallio has a single semicircular arch with a diameter of 11.66 meters. The underground “soccorso coverto” connected the Torrione to the Rocca via more than 360 steps. The Chiesa di San Domenico was rebuilt in its present form around the first half of the 14th century by the Celestine order. The Chiesa di San Francesco is an example of central Apennine Gothic architecture.

The Cappella del Santissimo Sacramento in the Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta houses two large paintings by Gaetano Lapis.

Festivals, Music and Local Cuisine

The Festa della Pipa was established in 2000 to promote and raise awareness of the art of pipe making. It takes place every year and includes an exhibition with a market, attended by more than 58 pipe makers. Every year, the Festa della Pipa also features an international slow-smoking competition held in cooperation with the Pipa Club Italia. Cagli delle musiche takes place every year on the third Saturday in August, with musicians performing in Cagli’s characteristic urban spaces. During the celebrations in Cagli, the taverns organized by neighborhood offer a selection of typical local dishes.

Trails between the City and the Mountains

The historic and cultural circular route of Cagli is a 2.41-kilometer walking route. It leads to historic buildings, religious structures and cultural centers. In addition, the network of trails in the Cagli area offers walks and hikes of varying difficulty levels. In the Cagli area, a section of the Sentiero Italia leads from the village of Pieia to the summit of Monte Nerone. In this region, a section of the Sentiero Frassati runs from Cagli to the Monastero di Fonte Avellana.

Monte Petrano and the Fiume Bosso

The main access road to Monte Petrano is Provincial Road 54; it begins near the well-known Torrione in the center of Cagli and runs for 10 kilometers through the forests on the northern slopes of the mountain. The Fiume Bosso forms where the mountain streams Certano, Giordano and Fiumicello meet in Pianello, a hamlet of Cagli. Catch-and-release fishing is practiced on the Fiume Bosso. Some sections of the Fiume Bosso form small canyons, gorges, waterfalls, limestone slides and natural pools, which are used for recreation by river enthusiasts in summer.
