Lucrezia: History, Culture and Excursions along the Via Flaminia
Lucrezia on the ancient Via Flaminia
Lucrezia lies on the ancient Via Flaminia in the broad plain on the left bank of the Metauro River.
History between Church and Villa
The place name Lucrezia first appears in the 1783 land register of Cartoceto, specifically as “osteria di Lucrezia”. The parish church of Sant'Apollinare was rebuilt in 1950 to replace its predecessor, which was destroyed during the Second World War. The place name and the church mark different historical layers of Lucrezia.
Villa Adanti stands on the hill above Lucrezia and has a garden. It was built between 1860 and 1875 as the summer residence of the baritone David Squarcia. Lucrezia was almost completely destroyed during the retreat of the German troops; almost all the houses were razed to the ground, while Villa Adanti was spared.
Cycling along the Via Flaminia
The cycling tour along the ancient Via Flaminia leads through Lucrezia to Calcinelli and then continues to Cuccurano; it ends in Fano. Fano is relevant as the endpoint when planning the cycling tour; Lucrezia and Cuccurano lie between Calcinelli and the destination of Fano on this route.
Squares, Music and Carnival
Piazza Papa Giovanni Paolo II is located in Lucrezia. Music Square was a traditional event in Lucrezia and reached its ninth edition in 2017. The programme took place over three evenings in Piazza Giovanni Paolo II: the first evening was devoted to the youth band competition “Frammenti & Contaminazioni”, while professional musicians and singers performed on the other two evenings. For travel planning at the time, the three evenings of Music Square in Lucrezia represented more than a single date on the calendar.
The traditional Carnevali di Mezza Quaresima also returned to Lucrezia's Piazza Giovanni Paolo II. This piazza was intended to form the centre of the celebration, while the floats were to follow a traditional circuit there. From 3 p.m., a parade of allegorical floats was planned, including the customary throwing of thousands of Easter eggs and several hundredweight of chocolate. For planning the day in Lucrezia, the parade from 3 p.m. was scheduled as the afternoon programme of the festival at the time.
Regional Products and Olive Oil
At the 2018 Festa Fava e Formaggio, the Pro Loco Cartoceto food stand offered tacconi di fava, cheese, fresh broad beans, piadine, cured meats and bruschetta with extra virgin olive oil from Cartoceto. The dishes combine simple festival cuisine with products from the surrounding region.
In the area around Cartoceto, the first DOP olive oil of the Marche region, DOP Cartoceto, was introduced in 2004. A market for olive oil and olives has been documented there since 1977.
