Pasturana between Wine Country and History

Pasturana lies in a gently hilly landscape on the northern edge of the Gavi DOCG area. Here, the agricultural landscape transitions into the first elevations of Oltregiogo. Pasturana is one of the municipalities of the Gavi DOCG region where viticulture has historically been part of the agricultural landscape. Woods and Water along the Rio Riasco

The Passeggiata di San Martino runs along Braghera Road through the woods and follows the Rio Riasco. Its route highlights the connection between wooded landscape and water.

The Canalone and the History of Water

The Canalone is a structure made of dressed stone. It carried water from a channel coming from the Rio Riasco over the Rio Torto, thereby supplying the mill in Pasturana. This structure makes a concrete relationship between water conveyance and the historical use of the mill visible. The Canalone thus represents an aspect of Pasturana in which technical function and landscape are closely connected.

Antica Pieve di San Martino

The Antica Pieve di San Martino was built during the Lombard period and later became a Benedictine monastic settlement. It was recently restored and structurally consolidated. Today, each side features four brick pillars, each with four wooden roof trusses. Its walls consist partly of bricks and river stones and partly of rammed earth using pisé technique. At the rear are three arches made of unfired bricks.

In the former monastic area of the Antica Pieve di San Martino, a small church has been preserved; it was probably the baptistery. This uncertain attribution is part of the historical tradition of the former monastic area and preserves another indication of its earlier religious use.

Churches in the Town

The parish church of San Martino has a gabled façade and an entrance portal framed by a neoclassical portal, with a fresco above it. It also has a bell tower. Next to the parish church stands the Santissima Trinità church oratory, which was also built by the Trotti family. Together, the two buildings form a concentrated architectural focus for anyone wishing to explore Pasturana’s religious architectural history.

Gavi DOCG and Local Festivals

Along the Gavi DOCG route, visits and tastings can be arranged with the producers based there.

A cyclocross race takes place in November on the occasion of the San Martino patron saint’s festival. The Sagra del Corzetto took place in Pasturana from September 5 to September 7, 2025. It is considered the town’s longest-standing festival and its 52nd edition.
