Churches with Different Historical Layers

The parish church of San Calocero preserves a distinctive architectural detail with its campanile. The bell tower is attributed to the late 15th century. Inside the church there is also a Lingiardi organ from 1817. San Calocero therefore brings together medieval architectural history and a 19th-century instrument—two different points of interest for your visit.

The parish church of San Giovanni also tells the story of several eras. The new parish church was founded on 29 August 1453. Its campanile features a Gothic design, while the wall structure is enriched with ceramic bowls. In the apse area, the church preserves a fresco by Francesco Mensi created around 1856. Those interested in details of sacred buildings will therefore find here not just a single date of construction, but a combination of foundation history, tower design, material impact and painting.

The church of Santa Maria e San Siro is considered the oldest building in Sale and is a Romanesque church. Its historical significance is further shaped by an event from the Middle Ages: the peace treaty between Pavia and Tortona was signed in this church in 1165. Together with San Calocero and San Giovanni, it forms a cultural focus spanning several centuries, even though the buildings do not belong to the same period.

Destinations Around Sale

There are other independent destinations around Sale. Palazzo Guidobono is a palace in the vicinity of Sale; the Episcopal Palace is also classified as a palace there. The Marengo Museum adds a museum in the surrounding area to this selection. In the wider regional area, there is also Castello di Marengo, a castle. Several gardens are available for a more leisurely experience. Giardini Camurati and Giardini Aldo Moro are located in the vicinity of Sale. One cycle path begins in the Sale area on Provincial Road 85 and leads to the municipality of Alluvioni Cambià; however, no specific duration or uniform level of difficulty can be inferred from this route.
