Castagnole delle Lanze: Wine Landscape, Arcades and Historic Centre

Wine Landscape with Historic Centre

Castagnole delle Lanze lies at the heart of the UNESCO area of the wine landscapes of Langhe, Monferrato and Roero. The area is characterised by hills, vineyards and hazelnut groves. In Castagnole delle Lanze, wine landscape, historic centre and regional products come together.

A Route Begins at Piazza Giovannone

The visitor route through the historic centre of Castagnole delle Lanze begins at Piazza Giovannone. This square therefore serves as the starting point for exploring the historic town centre. The route is marked by paving known as “sternia”, made of cement and stones from the Tanaro River. The distinctive term refers to a local design feature that shapes the route through the centre.

Thirteen painted arches stand out along Via Ener Bettica. Their colours evoke nature, the seasons, grapevines and wine. The arcades thus draw on motifs that play a recognisable role in Castagnole delle Lanze and its landscape.

San Pietro in Vincoli: Baroque, Marble Altar, Fresco and Older Art

The parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli was built in the Ligurian-Piedmontese Baroque style; construction began in 1681. The high altar is a work of Piedmontese late Baroque art in polychrome marble. For visitors interested in culture, the church brings together a precisely dated architectural history and a striking example of Piedmontese sacred art.

The parish church of San Pietro in Vincoli also preserves a 16th-century fresco depicting the Madonna and Child.

Wines and Hazelnuts as Local Themes

The local wines of Castagnole delle Lanze include Moscato, Barbera, Dolcetto and Chardonnay. Another typical product is the Piemonte hazelnut with the protected geographical indication IGP.

In 2010, the municipal administration launched the initiative Adotta un filare. It enabled participants to adopt several metres of Barbera d’Asti vines in exchange for personalised bottles of Lanze wine. The initiative combined winegrowing with a personal form of participation in the vines and their produce.

Events in July, August and September

The theatre series Paesaggi e oltre takes place in July and September. It includes promenade theatre throughout the historic centre as well as fixed performances at scenic viewpoints. The Contro festival took place in August and included performances by numerous national singers.

The 167th Fiera della Nocciola was scheduled for Monday, 31 August 2026.

The “Terrazzo” Belvedere Above the Prello Valley

A belvedere known as the “terrazzo” was created in Piazza Balbo above the Prello Valley, with meadows, vineyards and mulberry groves.
