Church Art and Local Character

San Giusto Canavese reveals its character particularly clearly through art, festival traditions and local everyday culture. If you choose the town for a trip to Italy, the Chiesa Parrocchiale offers a concentrated introduction to art and architecture: The church has a red façade made of unrendered brick. The interior features polychrome marble, frescoes, gilded pilasters and capitals, as well as twelve stained-glass windows. It is considered the most significant, artistically outstanding and valuable monument in San Giusto Canavese.

From Gerbo Grande to Villa Margherita

San Giusto Canavese is traditionally known as “'l Zerb”. The nickname is traced back to the former Gerbo Grande, which is considered an extensive heathland covered with heather plants. Historically, the Gerbo was communal and public pastureland belonging to the municipality of San Giorgio, where cattle from San Giorgio were brought to graze. The Festa della Contrada traditionally takes place in September and includes an amusement park in Piazza Vittorio, a gymkhana with cars and tractors, and an autumn fair the following day. During the Sfida dei Quattro Cantoni, held annually in September, the four districts of San Giusto Canavese compete against one another.

The carnival of San Giusto Canavese is also associated with the local masks Tirapere and Gerbolina and has been carried on from year to year. One specific date was 7 February 2026: During the Carnevalone, Tirapere and Gerbolina were presented from the balcony of the town hall, after which a procession made its way through the town’s streets.

The municipal library of San Giusto Canavese offers the opportunity to consult and borrow books, manuscripts, newspapers, magazines, photographs, DVDs, CDs and e-books free of charge.
