Viù: Mountain Trails, History and the Michetta Viucese

Viù lies in a valley basin crossed by the Stura di Viù. The Valle di Viù is in the province of Turin and includes the municipalities of Viù, Lemie and Usseglio. Mountain Trails, Stages and Equestrian Tourism

The Le Borgate di Viù circular route starts at the Parrocchiale di San Martino and follows a short old paved path behind the town to the park of Villa Franchetti. The park can be reached on foot via a staircase that begins on Via Luigia near Piazza XXIV Maggio. To conclude, the circular route recommends an aperitif with a tasting of michetta viucese. The fifth stage of the Sentieri Resistenti runs from the lower Val di Viù to the watershed between the lower Val di Viù and the lower Val di Susa and reaches Colle del Lys and the refuge there after approximately five hours. The circular hike to Uja di Calacante from Fubina is 12.5 kilometres long and reaches a summit at 1,615 m. The different distances and approximate stage durations help you adjust your daily plans to your own pace. In the Vallone di Lunella and the Vallone dei Tornetti, there are repeatedly tested routes for equestrian tourism; a crossing over the ridge into Val d’Ala is possible. Fishing is permitted in the various streams of Viù with the required permits.

Churches, Villas and Museums

The Parrocchiale di San Martino is considered the largest church in the Valli di Lanzo. Villa Franchetti is one of the historic villas in Viù that were built or remodelled around the middle of the 19th century. On Piazza del Mercato stands the Pietra delle Madri, considered a Celtic stone dating from the 3rd century BC. The Museo Diffuso di Arte Sacra displays a 17th-century depiction of the Ostensione della Sindone from the chapel in the Venera district. One room of this museum is dedicated to historic liturgical objects. In 2017, the second location of the Museo Diffuso di Arte Sacra opened in Viù; it is dedicated to history. The hall on the first floor of the Ecomuseo della Resistenza "Carlo Mastri" hosts temporary exhibitions as well as archival, audio, video and bibliographic materials. The exhibition room usually houses a photographic exhibition about the partisans of the 17th Garibaldi Brigade.

Nature and Remembrance at Colle del Lys

The Parco Naturale del Colle del Lys is crossed by an old network of paths and mule tracks. The eight Sentieri di Memoria at Colle del Lys are marked with memorial plaques and information boards. The Ecomuseo della Resistenza "Carlo Mastri" presents the geological peculiarity of the Parco Naturale del Colle del Lys, known as the "Fiumi di roccia", and also introduces the endemic plant Euphorbia gibelliana. Ciarm del Prete reaches 2,390 m and overlooks a natural amphitheatre from the Tornetti hamlet.
