Piedilago brings together an artificial lake, paths through the landscape and traces of history to create a destination with different points of access. Lake Piedilago lies alongside the nearby peaks, while the Oratorio, signal tower, ruins and church provide cultural and historical points of reference. This creates a place that you can discover according to your itinerary, whether via a hiking stage, a cycling route or its individual landmarks.
Culture and historical traces
In the Località Piedilago, the Oratorio Madonna della Neve was rebuilt in 1850 and dedicated to Madonna della Neve and Saint Carlo Borromeo. The Oratorio Madonna della Neve and the remains of the signal tower belong to different historical periods: the Oratorio was rebuilt in 1850, while the tower dates back to the Middle Ages.
In the wider region around Piedilago, there are also the ruins of Gmeinalp and the church of Parrocchia Ss. Gervasio E Protasio. Visitors interested in culture encounter religious, medieval and ecclesiastical landmarks in Piedilago, Cristo and the wider surrounding region.
Lake, peaks and paths
The area around Piedilago is complemented by several peaks: La Pizzetta and Pizzo dei Croselli are located nearby. Pizzo Nava and Corona Troggi are situated in the surroundings of Piedilago. Together with Lake Piedilago, they form a landscape that draws the eye both to the water and to the mountain contours.
For hikers, the Nordic walking route from Verampio to the Terme di Premia offers an alternative route via Piedilago. Lake Piedilago is a designated point of interest on this Nordic walking route. A path runs along the artificial Lake Piedilago before the route returns to a flat paved road. The flat paved section follows the lakeside path and thus creates a clear change for the day's stage.
Below the hamlet of Cristo, the route runs along a flat paved road through the Piana di Pissero. For cyclists, one option follows the state road to Piedilago; instead of taking the impassable ascent, they can continue to Cagiogno on a paved road.
Piedilago as a stage destination
Piedilago is designated on the route as a place to stay overnight and eat. On the G00 Via del Gries stage between Baceno and Ponte, refreshments are available in Premia or Piedilago and at the Terme di Premia, in Cadarese and Fondovalle. Albergo del Ponte in Piedilago is associated with a bicycle rental service. For planning your trip, Piedilago connects the route of the stage with the surrounding paths, peaks and historic sites. The stage between Baceno and Ponte extends beyond Piedilago.
