Carisio between the Via Francigena, rice fields and waterways

Carisio combines a water-shaped landscape with historic buildings and a stage of the Via Francigena. Alongside the Canale Depretis and the Canale Vanoni, the Elvo is one of three waterways that define Carisio’s location, surrounded by watercourses. This creates a destination where culture, rice fields and nature observation come together in different ways.

Churches and historical traces

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Lorenzo was rebuilt in the 14th century. Its Gothic bell tower with pointed-arch windows provides a distinct architectural accent. The church has a single nave and two Neoclassical side altars. Carisio also preserves a medieval gate tower from the former castle area. Sacred architecture and traces of the past are therefore found in close thematic proximity here.

The Chiesa di San Rocco has a simple rural style typical of churches in the region. It is open to everyone during services. Every year on 15 August, religious events take place during the Festa di San Rocco, including a Mass and processions in honour of the saint. Water landscape and nature

The Riserva Naturale della Garzaia di Carisio is located near the Torrente Elvo and is of interest for its significant heron colony, with several breeding species. Part of Carisio lies within the Parco naturale delle Lame del Sesia. The town also has a sport-fishing lake. Together, these places and waterways create a landscape that combines watercourses, protected nature and observable wildlife without reducing Carisio to just one type of experience. For nature observers, the heron colony is the focus at the Garzaia; the sport-fishing lake, by contrast, is part of the local connection to the water.

Via Francigena and rice fields

Carisio is a stage of the Via Francigena on the route from Santhià through rice fields towards the town. The regional connection to rice is also specific: Carisio belongs to the production area of Riso D.O.P. di Baraggia. This brings a historic pilgrimage route and the agriculturally shaped surroundings together in a shared travel theme.

Getting there and choosing the right local reference

Carisio can be reached via the A4 Torino–Trieste. In the direction of Turin, take the exit for the SP3; in the direction of Trieste, take the SP143 exit and then the SP3. The approach can be organised according to your direction of travel on the A4: both access routes subsequently lead to the town via the SP3.
