Arzana showcases Sardinia in two closely connected yet clearly distinct facets: as a natural area at the foot of Monte Idolo and as a place bearing traces of many eras. When planning your trip, both tranquil landscapes and archaeological and ecclesiastical remains are therefore of interest. The special character lies not in a single attraction, but in the diversity of destinations that define Arzana.

Natural Area and Wildlife

Arzana lies at the foot of Monte Idolo. The Pirincanes Gorge forms freely accessible pools of crystal-clear water known as the "Cauldrons of the Giants". The waters of Pirincanes are home to the Sardinian trout and the Sardinian brook salamander. The Rio 'e Forru waterfall is a natural feature of Arzana in Gennargentu Park. The Funtana Orrubia mountain spring lies in Arzana's natural area. Mouflons, wild boars and deer live in the forests of the Flumendosa valleys. Three yew trees stand in the Tedderieddu Forest and are considered to be among the oldest in Europe.

Mountain Landscapes and Trails

For hiking enthusiasts, the mountain world with Punta La Marmora takes center stage. At 1,833 meters above sea level, Punta La Marmora is Sardinia's highest peak. The summit can be reached via hiking trails such as the Gennargentu T-721; along the route, there are numerous viewpoints and areas equipped for taking a break. Punta La Marmora belongs to the Site of Community Importance "Monti del Gennargentu" (ITB021103) in the Natura 2000 network. The combination of a summit destination, hiking trails, viewpoints and rest areas makes this theme interesting for a trip focused on mountain landscapes and nature observation.

Archaeology, Churches and Photography

The area around Arzana was already used during the Nuragic period. The necropolis with the Domus de Janas of Perdixi is located in Perdixi. The archaeological site Nuraghe e villaggio di Ruinas comprises a trilobate nuraghe, the remains of a sacred well and around 200 circular huts. You can reach Nuraghe e villaggio di Ruinas via the SS 389 and then along a signposted paved road. The present-day parish church of San Giovanni Battista dates from 1860 and preserves a medieval cross made of Silisé as well as a monstrance from the 17th century. The Church of San Martino has a small bell gable and a circular opening on its façade. Remains from the Roman era and a thermal complex were discovered in Su Baingiu within Arzana. Five photographs by Oliviero Toscani depicting the town's centenarians are displayed along Arzana's roads.
