Oschiri between Culture, Lago Coghinas and Sardinian Landscapes
Accommodation in Oschiri
Oschiri between Mountain Landscapes and Lago Coghinas
Oschiri lies at the foot of Monte Limbara in Gallura. The surrounding area is characterised by hilly and mountainous landscapes, where rich Mediterranean vegetation blends with extensive grazing areas. This makes the town a destination for travellers who want to discover Sardinian landscapes not only by the sea, but also inland.

Lago Coghinas is an important natural area. The artificial lake was created in 1927 by damming the river of the same name. Mediterranean maquis, holm oak forests and cork oak stands grow along its shores. The lake is also home to numerous bird species and aquatic fauna. This combination of water, woodland and wildlife gives the region its own natural character.
From Oschiri, the developed shore of Lago Coghinas can be reached via the SS 392 towards Tempio Pausania and then continuing to the bridge. This connection is particularly useful for navigating between the town and the surrounding landscape if you want to combine cultural impressions with a stay by the lake.
Romanesque Church and Archaeological Heritage
Among Oschiri’s historical landmarks is Nostra Signora di Castro. The Romanesque church is documented by the first written sources from 1164 to 1174. Until 1503, it was the seat of a diocese. Its history thus reflects the town’s long-standing religious and regional importance, without implying that it continues to serve this function today.
The MuseOs – Museo Civico Archeologico ed Etnografico is divided into three departments across two floors. It displays prehistoric, Nuragic, Roman, Byzantine and medieval artefacts from archaeological sites in the Oschiri area. On an exhibition area of 600 square metres, information screens, audio, documentary and video content complement the presentation for visitors.
The Domus de Janas necropolis in the hamlet of Malghesi is also one of the area’s specific archaeological points of interest. It comprises 25 underground burial chambers. The rock altar of Santo Stefano is a short distance from Oschiri’s historic centre and adds to the cultural and historical points of reference in the nearby area.
Routes with Different Distances
The Puttu Iscia – Badde fustes alvos route is designated as a 20 km gravel track. The Diga Coghinas – Bigalzu – Nuraconi route is 16 km long, while the Filigosu – Tandalò route has a length of 18 km.
Su Filigosu adds another natural area. It is a nature oasis with Mediterranean maquis and wild fauna. Together with Lago Coghinas and the landscape around Monte Limbara, it creates a varied picture of water, vegetation, grazing areas and established cultural landscapes.
Oschiri as a Base for Planning Your Trip
If you are looking for accommodation in Oschiri, you can organise your trip around different priorities: the Romanesque church, the MuseOs, the necropolis and the rock altar offer insights into the region’s history, while Lago Coghinas, Su Filigosu and the routes focus on landscape and nature. Oschiri therefore remains a clearly defined choice for a trip to Sardinia that combines culture and inland landscapes.
