Bronte among pistachio cultivation and the Mount Etna landscape

Bronte combines a distinctive pistachio culture with landscape experiences on Mount Etna, historical collections and special evidence of the region’s past. The pistachio as part of local life

The Bronte pistachio harvest takes place every two years, more precisely in odd-numbered years, between the end of August and the beginning of September. It is considered a shared local ritual involving the entire population of Bronte. The “Sagra del Pistacchio” also takes place at the end of September every year. The venues are the squares and streets of the historic old town.

The Bronte pistachio is used, among other things, for cannoli, pistachio ice cream, granita, torroncini and buccellato. At ‘A Ricchigia, a visit includes a walk through pistachio groves at the foot of Mount Etna. This is followed by a tasting of pistachio products made by hand in the company’s own workshop.

Hiking trails, lava rock and the Grotta della Neve

Piano dei Grilli is the starting point for Hike No. 6 in Parco dell’Etna. Trail 710 also begins there and leads to the Altomontana Path, Trail 701, at the end of its route. At Piano dei Grilli, a refuge run by a private association offers refreshments.

The Grotta della Neve is a neviera created by converting a lava cave. For a long time, accumulated snow was stored there for consumption during the summer. On the way to the Grotta della Neve, lava formations created by eruptions of Mount Etna around 1614–1624 are visible. Natural features and the history of this site’s use are closely connected in the same narrative, without the cave having to be viewed merely as a landscape attraction.

Library, art and railway history

The Real Collegio Capizzi was founded by Ignazio Capizzi in the 1770s. The foundation stone was laid in 1774, and the inauguration took place in 1778. At the Real Collegio Capizzi, the Biblioteca Borbonica preserves humanities books from the 17th and 18th centuries. It contains more than 14,000 scientific, literary, theological and philosophical volumes.

The Pinacoteca Nunzio Sciavarrello is a museum of contemporary art with a permanent exhibition. One section displays works by artists of national importance, while another contains numerous works by Sicilian artists, particularly those of the Etna School. These artists were active between the 1920s and the 1980s. In addition, the Museo ferroviario di Bronte focuses on historical railway vehicles. It is located in the station’s locomotive depot. The vehicles include railcars, known as “littorine”, as well as the historic No. 10 “Mascali” steam locomotive from 1895.

Historical routes and an extensive park

The “Frammenti di storia millenaria” route highlights the ruins of the Castelli di Torremuzza. It also includes the Ponte Normanno di Serravalle and the Neolithic Dolmen di piano Cuntarati. The park of Castello Nelson covers approximately four hectares. Bronte therefore offers culturally interested travellers several different historical periods: from Neolithic dolmens through a Norman bridge and ruins shaped by the Middle Ages to collections, works of art and technical artefacts.
