Nicolosi between Mount Etna’s Landscape and Local History

Volcanic Formations and Trails

Among the most distinctive volcanic formations are the Monti Silvestri, two inactive craters formed as a result of the 1892 eruption. North of Nicolosi lies the Cava Asero, a disused lava quarry where the layers of old and new lava flows are visible. A nature trail was created there along a restored municipal path leading to the front of the 2001 lava flow.

At the Monti Rossi, access to the trails is via Via Goethe, near the Monti Rossi Adventure Park in the northern part of Nicolosi. The Sentiero del Germoplasma is approximately 1,153 metres long, has a gentle gradient of 7 percent and, with its special surface, makes it easier for people with motor impairments to use. The Schiena dell’Asino trail can be walked in any season, provided there is no snow.

Museums, Churches and Lava Stone

The Museo Vulcanologico Etneo contains photographs and large-format images of eruptions, as well as a scale model of the entire Mount Etna area. It also displays scoria, hematite crystals, sulphur crystals and silicates. The Museo Vulcanologico dell’Etna displays volcanic lava rock and provides information about the formation of the volcano and the main types of its volcanic activity.

The Tre Altarelli is an 18th-century monument with three arches. It was erected at the spot where the lava flow from the 1766 eruption came to a halt and represents the three patron saints of Nicolosi. The Chiesa Madre was built according to a design by Vaccarini in the first half of the 18th century. The Church of Madonna del Carmelo in Nicolosi dates from the 18th century. The ancient monastery of San Nicolò l’Arena was formerly the seat of an abbey; the Monastero di San Nicolò l’Arena in Nicolosi was built from lava stone.

Local Flavours and Getting There

Part of the region’s character is the Pane nero di Immanu associated with Nicolosi, also known as Irmana, Irmanu or Germanico. This typical bread consists of 80 percent rye flour and 20 percent durum wheat semolina.

A bus service departs from Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII in Catania, reaches Nicolosi and then continues to the Etna Sud tourist and sports station (Nicolosi Nord). This connection links the town with the higher station without specifying a particular length of stay.
