Mongiove: Sandy Beach, Sea Caves and the Coast of Monte Giove

Mongiove combines an extensive sandy beach with a striking coastal landscape on Monte Giove. Just a few metres offshore, sea caves and rock towers rise from the water; around Mongiove, the steep slopes of Monte Giove shape a natural landscape of caves, rock towers and coves. Extensive Beach and Striking Rocks

Mongiove Beach is very extensive and is characterised by its sandy shoreline. Sea caves and rock towers rise a few metres offshore in front of the beach. This gives the shoreline a distinctive counterpart of water, rock and coves. The landscape is therefore suitable for various ways of taking in the scenery: from the open sandy beach to the nearby rock formations off the coast.

Nature Reserve and Mediterranean Landscape

The Laghetti di Marinello nature reserve extends from the headland of Tindari to Mongiove. In the vicinity of Mongiove, it is connected to the Natura 2000 site SCI ITA030012 “Laguna di Oliveri – Tindari”. The stretch of coast between Patti and the Laghetti di Marinello is also characterised by typical Mediterranean vegetation. The natural area therefore extends beyond the immediate beach and encompasses different landscapes between the coast, headland and lagoon.

Discover Caves and Coves from the Water

The area's distinctive character can also be seen on the water. Grotte Beach offers boat trips along the coast of Monte Giove to hidden coves and natural caves that are accessible only from the sea. Some of the caves of Mongiove are easily accessible; a canoe is required for the more distant caves. The stretch of coast between Patti and the Laghetti di Marinello is suitable for excursions by boat, canoe and pedal boat. When planning your trip, it is therefore relevant whether you want to visit the easily accessible caves or include a canoe for more distant destinations.

Getting There via Patti

By car, you can reach Mongiove Beach via the Messina–Palermo motorway, taking the exit near Patti. Then follow the signs to Mongiove and Grotte Beach until you reach a dead end leading to the stairs or access to the sea. On Via Grotte in the hamlet of Mongiove, there is an unpaved car park on the uphill side next to the road. The approach therefore leads via Patti and Mongiove to the final stretch by the sea.
