Prizzi combines archaeological evidence, sacred art and a distinctive mountain landscape with Sicilian craft traditions. Between museums, historic churches, the medieval quarter and nature- and religion-themed trails, you can discover a place whose special features are closely connected with its surroundings and history.
Archaeology and Natural History
The Museo Archeologico di Prizzi was founded in 1999. It preserves most of the finds from excavations in the area of the Montagna dei Cavalli, attributed to the ancient city of Hippana. The palaeontological section displays fossils and minerals from Prizzi and other parts of Sicily. The pieces are arranged stratigraphically and document the development of the area over the past 250 million years.
The Montagna dei Cavalli, also known as Monte di S. Lorenzo, is an approximately triangular limestone ridge about 2.5 kilometres long. Its summit reaches an elevation of 1,007 metres. This distinctive landscape therefore provides an important geographical reference point for the archaeological finds, without requiring both subjects to be reduced to the same period.
Churches and Art in the Town
The churches of Prizzi preserve diverse traces of religious and artistic history. The Chiesa Madre – S. Giorgio was completed in 1561; its frescoes are thought to date from between the 14th and 16th centuries. The Chiesa di San Francesco features numerous decorations, stuccowork and gilding on the vault, walls and chapels. The Chiesa del Crocifisso dates from 1670.
The Chiesa di S. Sebastiano was built on an older religious structure and preserves a holy-water font made of white marble. It is supported by a hand and attributed to the Gagini school. The façade of the Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso also incorporates a Hellenistic architectural frieze depicting a bull, which may have come from the Greek city of Hippana.
Historic Centre and Local Trails
The Museo San Nicolò, named “Tra sacro e profano”, is housed in the former San Nicolò church, a religious building dating from the 13th century, and was inaugurated in 2017. Spiazzo Sparacio, an open-air museum, is located in the historic centre. The oldest still-visible tower in the medieval quarter was restored in 2013 and opened to the public for the Living Nativity, the Presepe Vivente.
The murals of Spiazzo Sparacio date back to 16 September 1989. At that time, the municipality invited three Sicilian artists—Franco Nocera, Totò Bonanno and Mario Bardi—to paint several walls in the historic centre. Historic buildings and more recent public art thus stand in a direct thematic relationship.
Nature, Tradition and Events
The Monte Carcaci Nature Reserve is crossed by the “Santa Rosalia” nature- and religion-themed trail. The tourist and cultural association Pyrizein develops nature, religious and monumental trails in Prizzi and provides tourists with information, assistance and guided support.
Caciocavallo is also part of the local character. It is Prizzi’s most important cheese product and is made exclusively from cow’s milk; cheese production continues to be carried out individually and by traditional methods. Events known in Prizzi include the Ballo dei Diavoli, which takes place during Holy Week.
