Cavalese lies on a sunny terrace opposite the Lagorai mountain range. The town combines historic churches, art and regional traditions with trails into nature, contemporary art on display year-round, and activities centred around water and ice skating. This allows you to shape your stay around culture, landscapes and distinctive local experiences.

Historic Places in the Centre

The Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme was probably built towards the end of the 13th century. It houses an art gallery, a museum and an archive containing manuscripts, statutes and historical writings. From 26 June to 27 September 2026, the Palazzo is open daily except Tuesdays from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 18:30; the last admission is at 18:00.

The Chiesa di San Vigilio was built between 1685 and 1688 and consecrated in 1698. Its wooden high altar was donated by Leopold I of Austria. The church, its choir and the monastery house an extensive collection of paintings by artists of the Fiemme School, mostly by Giovanni Giuseppe Alberti. The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta was built in the 12th century and completely rebuilt in the 15th century. Its bell tower was built in the 17th century by Giuseppe Alberti; the wood-panelled entrance hall is decorated with frescoes by Antonio Longo.

The Chiesa San Sebastiano also represents the town's long history: it was built in 1464. During its restoration in 2002, the 19th-century Stations of the Cross by the Cavalese-born painter Carlo Vanzo were brought back to light. The Gothic bell tower received its battlements in 1829 and is now considered a symbol of Cavalese. In the Parco della Pieve, the Banco de la Reson commemorates the region's political history. The stone structure has two concentric rows of seats around a round table; from the 16th century until 1780, assemblies of the Comun General were held there every 15 August.

Art, Crafts and Local Tradition

The Museo Arte Contemporanea Cavalese was established in 2001 in the historic Palazzo Rizzoli in the historic centre of Cavalese. The Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Cavalese presents temporary group and solo exhibitions throughout the year. The municipal Venetian sawmill offers another way to experience history and craftsmanship: its former water-powered mechanism has been restored and is operated in summer for demonstration purposes.

La Desmontegada de le Caore is part of the town's living tradition. The event features a procession of goats and herders through the streets of Cavalese and celebrates their return from the mountain pastures. Regional products are also part of the townscape. Birra di Fiemme is an agricultural brewery that grows hops and barley, representing craft beer made with pure water and local ingredients.

Nature and Activities

The route from Masi di Cavalese leads to the Cascata di Cavalese, a waterfall about 20 metres high amid lush nature. The Parco della Pieve di Cavalese is also home to the circular trail “Montagna Senza Limiti – Giro del Parco della Pieve”. Both destinations give your plans a natural focus without requiring you to forgo historic impressions in the town.

The Stadio del ghiaccio Cavalese is a diamond-shaped facility in the centre of Cavalese. Visitors can go ice skating there in winter and summer. The adaptive Lugicap ICE board is available for people with limited mobility; it can be used with standard wheelchairs and enables ice skating with an accompanying person.

Water Experiences and Getting There

Acqua & SPA Cavalese has a 25-metre pool approved by the FIM with five lanes, five hydromassage and whirlpool pools, an 81-metre water slide and a baby pool. This complements Cavalese's cultural and scenic attractions with a clear focus on water and relaxation.

If you are travelling by car, you can leave the A22 at the Egna/Ora exit and follow the Statale delle Dolomiti SS 48 to Cavalese. In the town, historic spaces, contemporary art, local events, nature trails and accessible leisure activities come together within a compact thematic area.
