Sfruz: Craftsmanship, Church Art and Paths through the Forests
Accommodation in Sfruz
Between Monte Roen and Corno di Tres
Sfruz extends between Monte Roen and Corno di Tres. If you are looking for a place for your trip to Italy where craftsmanship, local history, forest paths and nature experiences come together, you can get to know Sfruz according to your different interests.
Townscape and Craft Tradition
Sfruz has preserved its original town layout with rural houses and grand residences. The historic buildings are characterized by stone portals, several frescoes and wooden structures. On Via Predaia, you can see a portal with a coat of arms and a pointed arch. At the upper end of Via Predaia, behind the playground, there is a high relief of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners.
The local history includes a centuries-old craft tradition, particularly associated with the traditional and especially high-quality Stufe ad Olle. These Stufe ad Olle have multicolored terracotta facings glazed in the fire. Stove building was widespread in Sfruz from the 16th century onward. The parish church of the town is also part of this cultural heritage: it is Chiesa di Sant’Agata, while the present-day church of Sfruz was begun in 1729. A restored 18th-century fresco in Chiesa di Sant’Agata depicts floral motifs, acanthus leaves and compositions of fruit. The traditional feast of the patron saint, Sant’Agata, includes the blessing of bread and water.
Forest Paths for Hiking and Mountain Biking
The area around Sfruz can also be explored thematically via designated paths. The Sette Fontane path connects Vervò and Sfruz through the fir forests of Tovalin and Somassolo and is also suitable for mountain bikes. The Sentiero dei Cavai runs through the forests in the valley of the Rio Sette Fontane between Tres and Smarano–Sfruz. It provides access to the rocky outcrop known as “Vout Sette Fontane”. Both paths make different forms of movement through the forest and landscape part of your travel planning.
Bees, Herbs and Regional Products
Another focal point is Sfruz’s historic apiary. The small wooden building is owned by the Municipality of Sfruz and was built at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to Rino Poli. Since 2023, the apiary has been a place where you can discover the life of bees and the surrounding biodiversity.
The “Face to Face with the Bees” experience offered by the MMape Bee Mill Museum and APS L'Alveare includes a short walk, a visit to the apiary with safe observation of the bees through a flight chamber, and a tasting of local honey varieties. The “Eatable Herbs” experience includes a guided walk to identify wild herbs, information about their traditional use in Trentino culture, and the preparation of a herbal remedy to take home. Sfruz is also known for potato cultivation.
