Camaldoli combines a protected woodland landscape with an unusually rich monastic culture. Nature Reserve and Botanical Insights

The Camaldoli Biogenetic Nature Reserve is a biogenetic reserve within the Foreste Casentinesi National Park. It belongs to the Natura 2000 network and covers 1,169 hectares. The Sentiero Natura Camaldoli provides an accessible introduction to the forest: it presents the trees of the woodland, including the silver fir and the mighty Miraglia chestnut, and serves as an introduction to botany. This trail is therefore particularly suited to visitors who want to discover the landscape not only through its views but also through its plant life.

Sacro Eremo and Monastic Culture

The Sacro Eremo di Camaldoli was consecrated in 1027. It lies three kilometres from the Monastero, secluded in the heart of the forest at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. Visitors can see the guesthouse, the church, the old refectory and the cell of San Romualdo. The Monastero church also contains a painting of the Nativity by Giorgio Vasari. The library of the Sacro Eremo was built in 1620 specifically opposite the Eremo church, above the cell of San Romualdo; the manuscript library and the incunabula were subsequently moved there.

The Antica Farmacia is also part of the site's monastic heritage: its history is inseparably linked to the monastery guesthouse. In Camaldoli, therefore, you will encounter not just individual buildings but various spaces whose functions are connected with monastic life.

Spiritual Activities and Special Interests

The Monastero's Foresteria offers biblical, theological and spiritual retreats, as well as days of reflection focused on monastic spirituality. It also provides introductory and advanced courses in the biblical languages of Hebrew and Greek. During Advent and Lent, the Foresteria offers retreats open to everyone, including young people. Alongside nature and culture, these activities give Camaldoli a clearly recognisable spiritual dimension.

Hiking around the Foresta di Camaldoli

Circular Route No. 7 runs around the Foresta di Camaldoli. It is considered challenging and is suitable for hikers with some experience. If you include this trail in your plans, it provides a physically demanding hiking option alongside the botanically focused Sentiero Natura. The two trails have different focuses and help you shape your time in the woodland landscape according to your interests and hiking experience.

Information for Your Stay

The park's information point in Camaldoli includes the Museo Ornitologico with the “Biggeri” collection, exhibition trails and educational facilities. The National Park information point provides information materials, sells park publications and souvenirs, and makes it possible to book excursions. In Camaldoli, you will therefore find both natural history content and practical ways to engage with the national park.
