Discover Le Piazze: Museums, History and Hiking Trails

Around Le Piazze, different travel experiences come together: in Castiglion Fiorentino, sacred art, church architecture and historic stage routes are combined, while museums and mountains can be found in the surrounding area. There are also short circular routes, more demanding hiking trails and longer connections through the landscape. This allows you to combine culture and physical activity according to your personal pace of travel.

Art and Architectural History in Castiglion Fiorentino

The Museum of the Pieve di San Giuliano in Castiglion Fiorentino has housed more than one hundred works of sacred art from various churches in the town since 2006. The architecture offers another way to explore the history: in the host municipality of Castiglion Fiorentino, the Santuario del Bagno was first reliably mentioned in 1527. The Church of Jesus was built between 1527 and 1545.

The Collegiate Church of Saints Michael and Julian has a neoclassical structure. It also includes a loggia with massive columns on travertine bases. Remains of a Roman bathhouse were discovered beneath the Parish Church of Saints Hippolytus and Cassian in Retina. These were followed by an early medieval parish church, a Romanesque church and finally a Renaissance building. At the Santuario del Bagno in the Val di Chio, there is also an old tradition of drinking its water or bathing in it.

Castiglion Fiorentino is the arrival point of Stage 80 and the starting point of Stage 81 on the Via Romea Germanica. Another historic landmark is Castello di Montecchio Vesponi, which lies in the immediate vicinity of Le Piazze. The range of options therefore extends from sacred collections and churches to historic buildings and an almost 300-kilometre pilgrimage route leading to places associated with important episodes in the life of the saint.

Museums and Landscape in the Surrounding Area

Several museums are located around Le Piazze. These include the Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Fratticciola, the Museo Diocesano Del Capitolo and the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca. The landscape extends from Monte Castiglion Maggio and Monte Corneta to Alta San Egidio, all of which are located in the vicinity of Le Piazze. Monte Castel Giudeo is situated in the wider regional area.

These different location references provide a clear framework for your planning: you can focus your stay more strongly on museums and historic architecture or place the trails and ridges at the forefront. For a culture-oriented day, Castiglion Fiorentino and the museums offer specific destinations; for an active day, several routes with clearly different lengths and levels of difficulty are available.

Hiking Trails for Different Requirements

The Badia Trail is a 7.2 km circular route that is accessible on foot and suitable for experienced hikers. The Olive Trail is 4.3 km long and runs through olive groves and vineyards. It requires only limited hiking experience and is also accessible on foot. The two trails therefore differ both in length and in the level of experience required.

The Sentiero del Romitorio is an 8.1 km hiking trail for experienced hikers. It starts at the foot of Montecchio Castle, runs along the slopes of Mount Sant'Egidio to Parco delle Comunanze and offers views over the Valdichiana. Those looking for a longer connection will find the Bonifica Trail, a developed cycling and hiking route approximately 62 km long that connects Arezzo with Chiusi.

The almost 300-kilometre Walks of Saint Francis pilgrimage route in Tuscany also broadens the geographical scale. It leads to places associated with important episodes in the life of the saint. The moderately difficult Castiglion Fiorentino Cippo Meoni circular hike is connected to Le Piazze. It is 11.27 km long and has 505 m of positive and negative elevation gain.

The sculptures by Giuseppe Dorgioni include the Cippo Fabrizio Meoni. Together with the trails through olive groves, vineyards and the slopes around the Valdichiana, this creates a broad spectrum ranging from short hikes and more demanding hiking trails to cycling and hiking connections and cultural-historical exploration.
