Lippiano: Castle History and Hiking Trails Among Chestnut Trees

Castle History and Sacred Sites

The Castello di Lippiano was an ancient residence of the Bourbon del Monte family. Today it is privately owned and is generally not open to visitors. Nevertheless, its history remains present in the townscape: At the foot of the Castello di Lippiano, a quarter used as a ghetto developed between the 15th and 19th centuries.

A visible detail of the fortifications is the old circular bastion of the Castello di Lippiano. Its circular ground plan can be seen from the outside at Piazza Umberto I. An entrance arch marked with a plaque leads to Lippiano’s ancient Jewish ghetto.

Two churches also shape the town’s historical character. The Chiesa della Madonna delle Grazie was built in 1717 by Marchese Francesco. It is privately owned and is generally not open to visitors. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a Neo-Gothic church that was rebuilt after the 1917 earthquake.

Hiking Trails Around Lippiano

For a longer hike, the Anello di Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano circular trail, classified as E, is available. It is 16 km long, with a walking time of 5 hours and 30 minutes. For the trails, hikers can use the symbols to check walkability and trail marking, as well as access detailed route descriptions and GPX tracks. At 16 kilometres and with a walking time of five and a half hours, this loop requires its own day plan, also taking breaks and personal walking pace into account.

Sentiero 152 connects Lippiano with Sentiero 155. It runs through a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees. From Sentiero 152, the view extends to Lago di Montedoglio and across the upper Tiber Valley. From the summit of Monte Paiaiolo, there is a 360-degree panoramic view. This trail also offers the opportunity to visit the Marzano area.

Sentiero 153 SL is part of the multi-day Sentiero dei Laghi, which connects Lago Trasimeno with Lago di Montedoglio. Sentiero 153 SL leads to Lippiano at an elevation of 424 metres.

At the trail junction near Lippiano, there is a connection to circular trail A8, the Citerna–Monterchi–Lippiano route. Two other hiking trails also cross near the former church in Lippiano, which has since been deconsecrated.
