Art and Local History at the Ciuffenna Gorge
In the oldest and most characteristic part of the town, Fondaccio, the Ponte Romanico, also known as Ponte Vecchio, spans the gorge of the Torrente Ciuffenna. Ponte Romanico and Ponte Vecchio refer to the same bridge over the gorge. The Museo Venturino Venturi comprises seven sections organized around the main themes of Venturi’s artistic research. Venturino Venturi donated 93 sculptures and drawings to the municipality of Loro Ciuffenna on the condition that a museum dedicated to his work be established. The Archivio Venturino Venturi is open to visitors. Anyone interested in Italian art and the cultural character of small towns will find here different perspectives on the artist’s work and the historic town center.
Il Mulino: Hydropower and Chestnuts
Il Mulino houses a small museum with three stone mills driven by a water-powered wooden mechanism. Its location on the Torrente and its water-powered operation are directly connected: the wooden mechanism uses hydropower to drive the three stone mills. The mill was built around the year 1000 on the edge of a gorge on the Torrente Ciuffenna and is considered the oldest watermill still in operation in Tuscany; it is currently being renovated. In recent years, only dried chestnuts have been ground at Il Mulino.
Le Balze and the Landscape around Pratomagno
Le Balze features forms created by geological erosion, such as erosion gullies, balze and erosion pillars. This creates a characteristic landscape of particular scenic and ecological interest. The Le Balze nature reserve is located in the upper Valdarno at the foot of Pratomagno, between the Resco and Ciuffenna streams. It is jointly managed by the municipalities of Castelfranco di Sopra, Loro Ciuffenna, Pian di Scò and Terranuova Bracciolini. The southern side of the Pratomagno massif around Loro Ciuffenna offers excursions among impressive waterfalls and clear pools.
Hiking the Cammino dei Setteponti
The Cammino dei Setteponti runs from Pieve di Cascia or Donnini to Buriano di Castiglion Fibocchi. On foot, the route can be completed in two or three days, and by bicycle in one or two days.
Truffle Hunting and Tasting
The Caccia al tartufo experience includes a search in the woodland around Odina. Participants can accompany a Lagotto as it locates and digs up truffles. This is followed by a tasting of freshly collected truffles with bread, oil and other dishes of the day.
