Moncioni between Villa Gaeta, Pinetum and historic traces

Moncioni combines nature, architecture and a far-reaching history.

Pinetum and the landscape around Moncioni

The Pinetum is located near the village of Moncioni on the slopes of the Monti del Chianti facing the Valdarno, at an altitude of 540 to 568 m. The protected area was established to preserve and enhance the Pinetum di Moncioni, a significant collection of exotic and non-exotic conifers from the 19th century. The altitude places the site geographically on the slopes of the Monti del Chianti facing the Valdarno. Moncioni thus focuses on a landscape theme that brings nature and garden culture together.

The park of Villa Gaeta is also characterized by conifers: it was transformed into a collection of conifers from around the world. Every summer, the park of Villa Gaeta hosts emerging artists as part of an artist residency project. The park of Villa Gaeta has a seasonal dimension: in addition to the conifers, the residency project is also part of it. This gives visitors interested in nature and culture different points of connection, without limiting the site to just one type of travel.

Villa Gaeta and historic evidence

Villa Gaeta is a 17th-century villa that was remodeled in the mid-19th century in the Victorian eclectic style. The Victorian eclectic style refers to the remodeling, not to the construction date of the 17th-century villa. The small church of Santa Maria Assunta in Moncioni contains paintings from the 17th century.

The history of Castello di Moncioni dates back at least to a document from 25 March 1084 in which the castle is mentioned. This document is preserved in the archives of the Badia di Coltibuono. The mention of the castle from the 11th century predates the later enfeoffment to the Guidi counts. The ownership of Castello di Moncioni later passed as a fief to the Guidi counts. The bell tower visible when entering the borgo was part of the old fortification wall.
