Salutio between the Mill, Church and Castle

Salutio lies along the Strada Valdarno Casentinese, which connects Talla and Rassina. Castello lies above Salutio. The place still bears this name today. This spatial arrangement alone reveals the various facets of Salutio: in the village and its immediate surroundings, historic buildings, places shaped by crafts and paths through the natural landscape come together.

Water Power and Local Products

A particularly vivid place is the private Mulino del Bonano mill. It still operates with its waterwheel today and processes local products. The Ecomuseo del Casentino’s waterway, or water-mill, trail includes the Mulino del Bonano in Salutio. This makes the use of water power in Casentino visible as a connecting theme.

The private ownership is important when planning a visit: visitors should contact the owners in advance to check whether access is possible. Under these conditions, it may also be possible to experience a practical demonstration of milling. Another direct connection between water and processing is shown by the Ferriera del Bonano. It is a water-powered ironworks that used the water of the Bonano stream to process iron.

Romanesque Church with Later Layers

The Pieve di Sant’Eleuterio in Salutio is a Romanesque church with Byzantine influences and Baroque elements. Its furnishings span several periods: the church contains 15th-century frescoes by Mariotto da Cristofano, a painter from Valdarno. The baptismal font also combines different periods. Its base probably consists of a reused column, while the painted decoration still dates from the 16th century.

Castle and Aristocratic History

The castle of Salutio has been documented since the beginning of the 12th century. Over the centuries, it was transformed into an aristocratic palace and became the residence of the Teri noble family. Those interested in the development of historic places will therefore find in Salutio not only a single medieval connection, but also the transformation of a building over a longer period.

Horse-Riding Trails through Forests and Open Landscapes

The Centro Ippico Antares offers numerous horse-riding trails in Salutio accompanied by a riding guide. The trails lead through forests and, in open areas, offer views of the natural landscape. This means that a stay can also be planned beyond architectural and art history: riders experience the surroundings along trails that alternate between wooded sections and open vistas.

Other Historic Places in the Surrounding Area

Near Salutio, about two kilometres beyond the Salutio stream, lies Santa Maria del Bagno. The former monastery is now used as a scout centre. The former monastic function and its present-day use belong to different periods and should therefore be considered separately.
