Solata on the ridge of the Chianti Mountains

Solata lies at an elevation of 619 metres on the final section of the ridge of the Chianti Mountains, which surrounds the upper Ambra Valley. From Solata, there are panoramic views over the upper Valdambra, the Sienese countryside, the Valdarno around Arezzo and Florence, Pratomagno, Casentino, La Verna and Valdichiana.

The elevation gives the village a distinct landscape setting. Together with the various trail connections, this creates a destination that you can get to know according to your interests—through activity, local history or views across the surrounding valleys.

Trails for different travel plans

The Sentiero dell’Alta Valdambra can be explored on foot, by mountain bike and on horseback. The choice of transport is therefore part of planning your day. Whether on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback, the Sentiero dell’Alta Valdambra offers different opportunities for breaks and different schedules. These ways of getting around offer different possibilities for incorporating Solata into an individual travel plan.

Solata lies on the Sentiero dell’Alta Valdambra CAI 47 route. The southern CAI Trail 47 is part of a historic connection between Torre Santa Reparata and Montebenichi, with Solata located midway along it.

The CAI Trail 45 passes through Solata along an old road that connected Valdambra with Chianti. The trails around the village therefore point not only to activities today, but also to a historic connection between these landscapes.

Piazza, church and fortified hilltop position

Piazza Garibaldi in Solata is home to the village fountain and the Church of SS. Jacopo e Cristofano. Of Solata’s former fortifications, only the church remains today.

SS. Jacopo e Cristofano is a single-nave building with a moulded eave and two openings framed in Pietra serena stone. The bell tower appears to have been restored and raised with modern masonry. The building therefore offers an opportunity to observe both its simple basic form and various details of its construction.

The historical origins of Solata are uncertain, but probably date back to the Etruscan-Roman period. Around the year 1000, Solata probably became a fortified hilltop position, mainly for defensive reasons.

Villa park and wild orchids

The park of a 19th-century villa in Solata is characterised by centuries-old cedars. Numerous wild orchids grow around Solata’s secluded cemetery. Nature is therefore present here both in the designed parkland and in the plant life around the cemetery.

Accommodation on the outskirts of Solata

Today, accommodation is available on the outskirts of Solata in a 19th-century residence. An overnight stay can therefore be combined with a historic building and a location on the edge of Solata.
