Alberi on the Egola River

Alberi lies on the banks of the Egola River. The damp valley near Alberi is home to extensive poplar plantations. In the past, there were several mills nearby: the river’s water drove their waterwheels, which were used to grind grain from the surrounding hills. Church and theatrical history

One notable cultural feature is Alberi’s present-day church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was built between February and November 1924 and consecrated on 28 December 1924. The present-day place of worship is thus connected with a clearly dated period in the town’s history.

Alberi’s historic theater also reflects changing uses over time. It was located in buildings on a corner in the center of the town, along the road to Sorripa. It hosted performances until the 1930s and also screened silent films. After the war, the theater was converted into two classrooms and was subsequently used as a school until the 1970s.

Historical traces between Alberi and Sorripa

Alberi’s local history can be traced back to 1413: at that time, Alberi was associated with the church of San Giusto in Sorripa, of which no remains survive today. In the 1861 census, the town was called Sorripa Nuova to distinguish it from the older Sorripa, located at a higher elevation.

Pozzo Sfondato and trails through the landscape

In the area around Alberi, you can reach Pozzo Sfondato via the municipality of Montaione’s extensive network of nature trails. Pozzo Sfondato is a Jurassic rock depression on the volcanic rock of the Evola River, where the water forms small waterfalls. For travel planning that combines landscape and activity, this area adds a geological and water-shaped dimension to Alberi’s cultural and historical themes.

The Anello Sughera cycle route descends via Via San Cerbone towards Alberi and reaches the Egola Valley. Through Alberi, the route passes a small church and then the bridge over the Egola River; after that, it continues along Via Casastrada. The stated figures are 15.4 kilometers, 265 meters of elevation gain, 51 percent asphalt and 49 percent gravel. This allows you to compare the distance, elevation gain and surface concretely before planning.

The Montaione Beach summer route was scheduled for June 7, 2026, running from Montignoso via fords, water stops and wooded riverbanks along the Evola to the shady forests of Alberi. The Montaione Beach event planned for the same day was open to adults and children, free of charge and accessible only by registration.
