In Campi Bisenzio, the protected Stagni di Focognano nature area, the Ragnaia woodland, museums and distinctive buildings come together. The town has always been linked to the Bisenzio River; its banks still make it possible to trace the history of these places.

Nature by the water: Stagni di Focognano and Ragnaia

Stagni di Focognano is a 65-hectare protected natural area of local interest in Campi Bisenzio and is managed by WWF. It comprises five basins and serves as an important stopover for numerous bird species during migration, including grey herons, coots, grebes and stilts. The Ragnaia woodland stretches along the banks of the Marina stream. Holm oaks, ash trees, elms and black poplars grow there; among others, starlings and chaffinches also live there.

Museums, churches and buildings: Villa Rucellai, Rocca Strozzi and Sant’Andrea

The Museo Antonio Manzi displays 109 works in five rooms on the ground floor of Villa Rucellai. The collection includes works from Antonio Manzi’s entire artistic career, including his early works from his youth. The Museo Archeologico di Gonfienti is located in the monumental complex of Rocca Strozzi. Its exhibition is divided into three chronological sections: the Bronze Age, the Etruscan period and the Roman period. Rocca Strozzi has largely been preserved in its original form; features include a powerful brick keep, a projecting chemin de ronde and a corner tower.

At the Museo d’Arte Sacra di San Donnino, the tour begins in a loggia with frescoes that were removed from the portico of the church of Sant’Andrea around 1960 for conservation reasons. The museum is located next to the church of Sant’Andrea, which naturally complements a visit to the museum. The church of San Giovanni Battista in Limite, also known as Chiesa dell’Autostrada, takes its name from the Autostrada del Sole; it was designed by Giovanni Michelucci and commemorates workers who lost their lives during construction of the Autostrada del Sole.
