Archaeology from the Etruscan Period to the Middle Ages
The Archaeological Museum of Fiesole traces the history of the town and its surrounding area from the second millennium BC to approximately the 11th century AD. The Archaeological Area preserves the remains of an Etruscan-Roman temple, a Roman theatre and Roman baths, as well as several Lombard tombs. This makes it possible to view historical development not only through individual buildings, but across several periods.
In the Garibaldi area are Etruscan terraces dating from the 4th to the 3rd century BC. A walk along the Etruscan walls offers views over the entire town. Those who would like to combine a visit to the archaeological remains with physical activity can include this area as a separate focus in their daily itinerary.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The religious buildings also give Fiesole a distinct historical character. The San Francesco monastery complex was built by the Franciscans in 1399. It was created by expanding a chapel and a house for a Benedictine nuns’ community that had existed since 1225. This chronological context makes the complex particularly interesting for travellers who would like to explore the religious and architectural history of the town.
The Badia Fiesolana served as Fiesole’s cathedral from the early Middle Ages until 1028. Cosimo de’ Medici, known as il Vecchio, commissioned the 15th-century Badia Fiesolana. The Cathedral of San Romolo is a Romanesque cathedral built in 1028 and expanded in the 13th century. Together with the monastery complex, these sites form a historical circuit through different architectural and historical periods, without reducing the individual buildings to the same era.
Trails, Vegetation and Viewpoints
The Stilicone Trail begins at the Fiesole Tourist Office next to the Archaeological Area and ends in Olmo. It is characterised by diverse vegetation and the presence of numerous wild orchid species. The trail is therefore suitable for an itinerary in which a visit to historical sites is complemented by an experience of the landscape. You should take its fixed starting and ending points into account when planning your route.
The Casa-Museo Primo Conti includes the villa’s garden, with impressive views over the Mugnone Valley. Group visits to the Museo Primo Conti require an appointment in advance; they are possible on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as in the afternoon. If you plan this visit, you should therefore arrange the appointment before the actual day of travel.
Practical Orientation on Site
The Paesaggi plurali project connects 40 sites of historical, artistic, scenic and cultural value through four thematic circuits. Information facilities and panels with QR codes have been installed at each stop. An information tower belonging to the project stands in Piazza Mino in Fiesole. There is no dedicated parking area for Fiesole’s museums. However, free parking spaces can be used in the town. This practical note is particularly relevant if you are combining several stops in one day or arriving by car.
