Luia between hills, village history and wine

Within the municipality of Certaldo, Luia forms part of the hill-country area and is considered an ancient open village, in Italian villaggio aperto. The village combines a distinctive landscape of vineyards and olive groves with traces of local history. This makes it a destination best explored through its paths, historic buildings and the agricultural character of its surroundings.

In the Certaldo area, the Cappella Rogai is one of the Tuscan chapels inspired by the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore.

Hills, valleys and agriculturally shaped landscapes

The higher ground around Luia is still predominantly planted with olive trees. On the lower-lying land, vineyards were planted wherever the clay content is higher. This distribution makes the transition between the hills and the lower elevations an immediate part of the village landscape. Here, vineyards and olive groves do not appear as separate backdrops, but as different forms of agricultural use around Luia.

Paths with views over the surrounding countryside

Via Piana branches off at the Oratorio di San Francesco and leads to the ancient open village of Luia within a few minutes. Access via Via Piana offers views over the Rio Apoli valley, with its vineyards and olive fields. This path therefore leads not only to a specific historic site, but also opens up views of the landscape in which Luia is situated.

A 5-kilometre circular route through the landscape leads to Casa padronale Rogai-La Fornace near the rural village of Luia. The circular route follows the hill ridge between the Elsa and Pesa valleys and passes through vineyards, olive groves, old churches and villages. Its clearly stated length helps you plan this route as an independent exploration of the surrounding area. In terms of content, it connects different landscapes with rural architecture and further traces of settlement.

Traces of a chapel, oratory and manor house

A branch of the Pitti family is said to have settled in Luia after being expelled from Semifonte. The Oratorio di San Francesco in Luia is said to have been founded in 1589 by Cino di Matteo di Cino. The chapel in Luia is said to have been dedicated to Saint Francis and the Assumption of Mary.

The historic manor house Casa padronale Rogai was associated with ownership of large parts of the houses and lands belonging to the nearby rural village of Luia. Its connection with the village's history adds a specific link between the manor house, the houses and the landholdings to the experience of the circular route.

Luia and wine

The wine also bears the name of the village. Tenuta della Luia's Luia selection is a Super Tuscan-style red wine in which Merlot is particularly prominent. Tenuta della Luia owns a Merlot vineyard directly beside the village of Luia. Luia wine was first produced in 2001.
