Lutirano: Monastic Sites, Acerreta Valley and Cycling Tour to Valico della Collina

Lutirano combines the valley landscape of the Torrente Acerreta with historic monastic sites and trails for hiking and cycling. Trebbana, Badia della Valle, the Eremo di Gamogna and the Valico della Collina each showcase a different side of the destination. The area extends from the Lutirano district via Ponte della Valle into the Acerreta Valley.

Trebbana and Sacred Heritage

Trebbana is an ancient monastic centre with a church dedicated to San Michele. The surviving church in Trebbana features 18th-century forms. One of the largest oak trees in Romagna stands a few minutes’ walk from Trebbana. Trebbana therefore combines sacred architecture, a specific historical date and a distinctive oak tree.

Badia della Valle and Gamogna

Badia della Valle Abbey was founded in 1053 in the Acerreta Valley. The Eremo di Gamogna was founded in 1053 by San Pier Damiani for the Camaldolese monks of the Badia di Acereta below. The Badia della Valle monastery complex contains a restaurant. The historic site and the restaurant are therefore located within the same monastic complex.

Hiking from Ponte della Valle

If you would like to combine a hike with a historic destination, the Eremo di Gamogna can be reached via a hiking trail from Ponte della Valle in the Lutirano district. CAI Trail 549 to Trebbana also begins at Ponte della Valle, 5 km upstream from Lutirano, and covers 1.8 km with a positive elevation gain of 249 m. Ponte della Valle is therefore the starting point for trails to two different historic destinations.

Cycling Tour to Valico della Collina

If you explore the landscape on two wheels, the climb from Lutirano to Valico della Collina gains 201 metres in elevation. The cycling tour from Lutirano to Valico della Collina is 5.5 km long and runs through a dense fir forest. The 201 metres of elevation gain should be taken into account when planning your time and energy.

Valley Access and the Acerreta

The road to Lutirano follows the valley floor of the Torrente Acerreta. From Lutirano, Via Valle Acerreta leads after around 4 km to Agriturismo Badia della Valle. The road and the river course therefore define the geographical connection between Lutirano and Badia della Valle.

Summer, Spring and Local Crafts

At the recurring summer event in Lutirano, polenta al ragù and fried piadina with cold cuts and cheese are served. The spring gathering “Lôm a mérz” takes place in the bed of the Torrente Acerreta. The summer event, the spring gathering and the “Fatto a mano a Lutirano” craft market each highlight different aspects of cuisine, landscape and crafts. The craft market takes place in the courtyard of Badia della Valle.
