Marcialla combines medieval history, sacred art, theatre and vibrant musical traditions. Frescoes were created in the Church of Santa Maria a Marcialla between 1375 and 1388. A local tradition also associates a fresco above a side altar with the young Michelangelo. The adjoining Oratorio della Confraternita di Sant'Antonio Abate preserves frescoes depicting San Sebastiano and San Rocco, attributed to Lunetti. The frescoes and their attributions connect Santa Maria a Marcialla and the oratory with the area's artistic and local history.

The development of the settlement also dates back a long way. After a castle was destroyed in 1184, the population was relocated to the market settlement of Marcialla, where a Romanesque oratory stood. Marcialla is also associated with Francesco Bagnoli (Marcialla 1876–Florence 1947), who later became the choirmaster at the opera house of Florence's Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore.
