Meleto between village history, art and remembrance

An ancient village with many layers of history

Meleto is an ancient village documented in official records since 970 AD. Those who want to discover Italy through its historic settlements and their stories will find various points of access here: the Church of Santa Cristina features a distinctive 17th-century style. At the same time, the Cassia Adrianea ran through Meleto from Barberino. This combination of a medieval past, sacred architecture and older routes makes the village a destination for travellers who do not want to limit culture to individual buildings.

Remembrance on the Meleto Memory Route

The Meleto Memory Route is a walking tour through the village’s farmyards and to the places where, on 4 July 1944, German soldiers, assisted by some Fascists, murdered 93 innocent men from the village. The route also offers a contemplative walk featuring works and poems by the artist Massimo Lippi from 1999. The Meleto massacre took place in four execution courtyards: Aia Benini, Aia Melani, Aia Pasquini and Aia Rossini. The walk therefore combines engagement with a specific historical event and an artistic form of remembrance.

Memorial sites and art in the village

The renovated public green space in front of the Circolo Sociale di Meleto houses the restored memorial to the victims of the First World War. It also contains a new memorial for the victims of the July 1944 massacres. Three sculptures installed in Meleto were created by the Korean artist Yunmi Lee, the Chinese artist Jiefu Zhou and the Iranian artist Solmaz Vilkachi. The sculptures installed in Meleto as part of the International Symposium for Monumental Sculpture “Pietra Sublime” were intended to form a small art park together with an existing sculpture.

Historical traces between the village and its surroundings

Meleto’s former importance is also reflected in various historical connections. For a time, Meleto was the seat of the so-called “Liga de Vallis Avane” and also housed the Società Filarmonica di Meleto. The Castello di Barberino, consisting of four watchtowers and a curtain wall, also stands near Meleto. Getting around and a historic festival

For getting around locally, one particularly clearly described feature is an accessible footpath: it connects the public car park below the Church of Meleto with the school administration area. When choosing accommodation, you can take the location in relation to such public reference points into account in your planning. The Festa del Re Maiale in Meleto provides another cultural highlight. It is a medieval historical reenactment held as part of the Feste del Perdono, complementing the constantly present historical and artistic themes with an occasion centred around a festival.
