MuGot: History in four halls

In the Ponzalla district, you will find the MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana, which consists of four large halls. The museum was founded in 2011 to preserve the memory of the fighting in September 1944 between German troops and the Allies in the Apennines north of Florence. For you, this is a clear focus on cultural history: Ponzalla combines the MuGot with remembrance of the events of this theatre of war.

Exhibitions and remembrance

The MuGot offers visitors, researchers and school groups various installations at the battlefield, as well as numerous museum objects from the Second World War. The Monumento ai Caduti del 363° Reggimento Fanteria US bears the names of 436 soldiers of the 363rd US Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, who were killed in combat in this area.

Visit at Passo del Giogo

Booking is required at the MuGot for visits to the battlefield and for battlefield tours in a nine-seater van. Bunkers and installations along a ridge at least 5 kilometres long around Passo del Giogo can be visited by prior appointment.

Hiking trails along the Gothic Line

The installations of the Gothic Line are part of several themed hiking trails that can be combined with a visit to the MuGot. One hiking route along the Gothic Line leads from Passo del Giogo initially along the marked forest track of routes 00 and SO.F.T.; after approximately 400 metres, it branches through a forest towards Monte Altuzzo. The route appeals to travellers who would like to explore historical themes not only in the museum but also along a trail.

Pass route via Ponzalla

The route “Tra curve e tornanti del Passo del Giogo” leads from Scarperia, via Ponzalla, to a 10-kilometre ascent to Passo del Giogo. For an individual trip to Italy, this route opens up an additional route perspective alongside the themed trails. The different trail lengths help you plan your preferred pace between culture, hiking and the pass landscape.
