Discover Pozzolatico: Church, Villas and the Via Romea Sanese

Church and Villas in Pozzolatico

Pozzolatico is associated with sacred history, historic villas, art and distinctive landscape features. The Via Romea Sanese, a long-distance hiking and cycling route, also passes through the town.

The Church of Saints Stephen and Catherine is Pozzolatico’s most important Catholic place of worship. It is one of the province’s protected cultural monuments. The church’s most recent protection measure dates from 21 May 1993 and refers to Law 1089/1939.

The villas also give Pozzolatico its historical character. Villa Rapi is one of the province’s protected villas. Its most recent protection measure dates from 11 June 1990 and likewise refers to Law 1089/1939. Villa Larderel is a historic villa dating from the second half of the 14th century. At the church and Villa Rapi, the protection measures were enacted in different years, even though both refer to the same law. The dates of the two protection measures are three years apart.

Art and Landscape in Pozzolatico

Pozzolatico is also associated with the work „Madonna con Bambino“, dated to around 1340. The approximate dating remains around 1340 and is not expanded to an exact year.

In Pozzolatico, a black mulberry tree (Morus nigra) is among Tuscany’s monumental trees. The Villa Larderel complex includes an artificial lake. The tree is an individual natural feature in the town, while the lake remains connected to the villa complex and is not a natural body of water. Thus, at Villa Larderel, historic architecture and an artificial element of the estate are situated in a specific spatial relationship.

On the Via Romea Sanese

The Via Romea Sanese passes through Pozzolatico and is suitable for hiking and cycling tours. The long-distance hiking and cycling route is 78 kilometres long in total and is divided into four stages. Both activities refer to the same route through the town.

The 78 kilometres refer to the entire route, not to the section through Pozzolatico. The four stages also apply to the route as a whole and not just to the passage through the town. For a longer hike or cycling tour, the stage structure can serve as an overarching framework. Anyone planning only the part that runs through Pozzolatico should not equate it with the total length. The 78 kilometres do not imply a separate distance for the section through the town, and the four stages do not constitute an additional subdivision of this section. For a shorter tour, its specific length therefore remains open.

Villa Larderel is located near the S.P. 70, which connects Impruneta with Florence. The road thus provides a specific link to both cities without establishing a separate distance from the villa to Impruneta or Florence.
