Pratolino: Medici History, Art and Nature

Pratolino brings together Medici history, art and nature within a compact thematic area. The Parco Mediceo di Pratolino was created in the 16th century as a residence for Francesco I de’ Medici and Bianca Cappello. Since 2013, the park has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany”. The UNESCO World Heritage designation refers specifically to the Parco Mediceo di Pratolino. The Parco Mediceo therefore brings together the history of the residence, works of art, ancient trees, wildlife and events.

Medici History and Notable Buildings

One of the park’s works of art is the Colosso dell’Appennino. Giambologna created the monumental figure between 1579 and 1580. Villa Paggeria is also known as Villa Demidoff. The Demidoffs converted it into a villa in 1872. Villa Paggeria and Villa Demidoff refer to the same building. In the Cappella in the Parco di Villa Demidoff, the building has a hexagonal floor plan and an external loggia. It also contains the tomb of the last Demidoff princess.
