Sammontana: Discover Culture, History and Trails
Sammontana combines a distinctive historic heritage with art, regional products and trails through the countryside. A parish church, the Fattoria di Sammontana, the Marco Bagnoli Atelier and Sentiero CAI 476 offer different ways to experience the area. Sammontana is therefore particularly suitable for travellers who do not want to limit their stay to a single theme, but instead wish to combine cultural history, outdoor activities and local products.
Hiking and mountain biking on Trail 476
Sentiero CAI 476 is 9.4 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 240 metres. It is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Along the way, the trail passes the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Sammontana and the artificial lake Lago artificiale di Sammontana. The completed 476 loop trail of the 4 Valleys network begins in Sammontana, climbs to Botinaccio and then descends towards the Arno.
Church, estate and traces of the past
S. Maria a Sammontana is a parish church. The Fattoria di Sammontana also reflects several historical periods: in 1867, its estate, including the main villa, the church, the distillery and the surrounding agricultural land, was acquired by Michele Dzieduszycki. The Fattoria di Sammontana was formerly owned by the Medici family. It also borders a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century.
The history of the Fornace di Sammontana dates back to 1700. At that time, it was founded to produce ceramics and terracotta materials. Another historical trace leads to the Villa di Salingrosso: it probably already existed in the Middle Ages. Surviving traces of towers and the enclosing walls that still remain point to this history.
Contemporary art at the Marco Bagnoli Atelier
The Marco Bagnoli Atelier is a multifunctional space that the artist conceived as a Gesamtkunstwerk. It houses a constantly changing temporary exhibition of his works from 1972 to the present day. The Pro Loco of Montelupo organises a series of events at the atelier, including guided tours and thematic focuses on the works displayed there.
The Marco Bagnoli Atelier is located at Via della Quercia 9 in the Sammontana district of Montelupo and is intended to become established as part of the local artistic heritage. For your travel planning, this creates a cultural focal point that brings together historic sites and contemporary art in Sammontana.
Wine and olive oil from Sammontana
The local character also includes the Fattoria di Sammontana, which produces high-quality wine and high-quality olive oil according to organic and biodynamic criteria. This aspect complements the trails and historical themes with a culinary perspective on the area.
