Bagnore is a linear settlement stretching between centuries-old chestnut forests. The village combines a clearly recognisable street layout with a history shaped by its former health resort status, cinnabar processing and religious landmarks. This makes it a destination where the landscape, settlement form and cultural history offer different ways to explore the area.

A settlement along the provincial road

Bagnore stretches along the provincial road between Arcidosso, the Bivio delle Aiuole and Santa Fiora. This linear form distinguishes the village from a compactly arranged historic centre and makes the relationship between the settlement and the transport route particularly clear. In addition, the completed first section of the footpath from Bagnore runs along Via Fratelli Cervi. It connects number 25 with the area of Bagnore’s multi-purpose sports facility.

From health resort to cinnabar processing

From the second half of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, Bagnore was a renowned summer health resort. This historical phase was followed by an industrial chapter: from 1923 to 1975, a cinnabar processing plant operated in Bagnore. The plant processed material from Monte Labbro. Both references give the local history a sense of chronological depth without conflating the different periods.

Casa del seguace Marsilio Lorenzoni

David Lazzaretti died at the Casa del seguace Marsilio Lorenzoni on the evening of 18 August 1878. In the same building, the “Il Risorgimento” cooperative was established in 1908, developing into today’s Coop Unione Amiatina. The building is therefore associated with two clearly distinguishable events: David Lazzaretti’s death and the establishment of a cooperative whose development leads back to today’s Coop Unione Amiatina.

Church, festival and local tradition

Another cultural landmark is the parish church of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore. It was completed in 1985 and consecrated by Bishop Eugenio Binini. The patronal feast of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore falls on the last Sunday in May. If you would like to consider ecclesiastical architectural history and local festival traditions together, you will find a specific date here alongside a clearly dated church building.

Bagnore’s cultural memory also includes the Tabernacolo della Madonna del Castagno tabernacle. It is associated with a local legend according to which the Madonna saved a shepherd boy attacked by wolves and his flock by bending the branches of a chestnut tree over them. The story complements the historical data with a tradition closely connected to the chestnut motif.

Chestnut forests and gravel bike loop

The landscape can also be experienced on a specific route. The Santa Fiora gravel bike loop passes through chestnut forests, along streams and clearings, and then reaches Bagnore. The village thus appears along a cycling tour that combines forest sections, open landscapes and waterways. This connection may be particularly interesting if you would like to combine cultural history with an active exploration of the surrounding landscape.

When planning your trip, several interests can be considered side by side in Bagnore: the linear settlement along the provincial road, the footpath section on Via Fratelli Cervi, the cinnabar history, the Casa del seguace Marsilio Lorenzoni, the parish church and the tabernacle. This cultural range is complemented by the chestnut landscape and the gravel bike loop, which reaches Bagnore from Santa Fiora.
