Castell'azzara between the Rocca, nature reserve and sweet treats

Castell'azzara can be discovered through its distinctive buildings, protected natural features, mining sites and regional sweet treats. Culture and architectural history

The Rocca di Castell'Azzara was built by the Aldobrandeschi in the 13th century. The complex includes a three-storey stone manor house arranged around the Torre dell'Orologio. The Torre dell'Orologio has four modern-era clocks, one on each side. This means that a single architectural complex brings together both the Rocca's medieval origins and striking architectural details from later periods.

The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario was built between 1525 and 1550. It houses a 17th-century painting of the Madonna del Rosario with Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena. The Villa Sforzesca is also one of the area's historic buildings: Cardinal Alessandro Sforza had it built in 1576. Together with the Rocca and the church, it offers various points of interest if you are interested in Italian history, sacred art and representative architecture.

Nature and trails

The Monte Penna Nature Reserve is a protected area established in Tuscany in 1996. The reserve contains sinkholes, trench-like depressions and caves on Monte Civitella and Poggio della Vecchia. These geological formations give a nature-focused day trip a distinctive emphasis without requiring you to limit yourself to a single landscape experience.

The Grotta del Sassocolato can be reached from Castell'azzara via a signposted route and after a walk of approximately one kilometre.

Mining and regional specialities

The Galleria Ritorta in the Miniera del Cornacchino is approximately 150 metres long and can be reached via a path of around 250 metres. Visits to the Miniera del Cornacchino must be booked directly with the guides. This makes the mine a destination where the desired visit requires some personal organisational preparation.

Castell'azzara also has distinctive culinary specialities. Ciaramito is a ring-shaped sweet pastry made from eggs, flour, sugar, natural yeast, anise seeds and lard. Taglioli are flat, diamond-shaped sweets approximately 4 to 5 centimetres wide, seasoned with black pepper, walnuts and honey. The two specialities therefore differ markedly in shape, ingredients and seasoning, complementing the cultural and landscape impressions with their own regional flavour.
