Chiarone Scalo: Discover the Coast, Nature and Maremma

Chiarone Scalo is a destination for you if you would like to combine coastal landscapes, nature observation, cycling and regional culture in a single stay. The main places of interest have different local names. When choosing your hotel or accommodation, it helps to distinguish between these place references: depending on your focus, the beach, paths, landscape or buildings may take centre stage.

Coast, Dune and Wetland

Le Dune del Chiarone is a flat coastal area protected by a dune system. The WWF Oasis Lago di Burano is located in the southern Maremma between Ansedonia and Chiarone, in the municipality of Capalbio. Ultimaspiaggia, a beach resort in LocalitĂ  Chiarone Marina in Capalbio, offers another connection to the coast. Ultimaspiaggia beach is characterised by light-coloured sand and stretches to the nature reserve and the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano.

Nature at Lago di Burano

For nature observation, the nature trail at the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano offers a clearly structured route along the dune. It includes seven observation points, including six hides and an observation tower. The combination of protected landscape areas and various observation points gives this natural setting a defined structure for walks and peaceful exploration.

Cycling and Road Routes

For cyclists, the “Itinerario tra Orbetello e la Costa d’Argento” cycling route reaches Chiarone Scalo and passes through the railway underpass to the SP Litoranea. Along the same route, the trail runs beside the sea and Lago di Burano. Another route, “Capalbio e i tesori della Costa d'Argento”, returns to the provincial Litoranea road through a new underpass in Chiarone Scalo. This provides the coast, lake, village and Litoranea as distinct reference points for route planning.

Tower, Customs History and Art

The Torre di Buranaccio stands on a coastal tombolo separating the sea from the wetland. Its square floor plan and walls two to three metres thick define the tower’s architectural appearance. In the regional surroundings of Chiarone Scalo, the Giardino dei Tarocchi, created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle, is located in Garavicchio. In the village of Chiarone, on the Via Aurelia, there is also the Palazzo del Chiarone. In earlier centuries, it served as a customs post for traffic between two states.

Maremma Cuisine and Event

The menu of the Sagra della Lumaca e della Cucina Maremmana includes snail dishes and Maremma specialities, including tortelli, rosticciana, acquacotta and fagioli al fiasco. The festival was planned to take place in the Chiarone Scalo area at Circolo Il Mare, with food stalls open daily from 7:30 p.m. It was announced as the 43rd edition.

Choosing Accommodation by Location

For this reason, it is advisable to use a precise place name when choosing accommodation. Chiarone Scalo, Chiarone Marina, Chiarone on the Via Aurelia and Garavicchio cater to different travel interests: cycling routes, the beach, former customs history or art. This allows you to choose your location according to your planned daily rhythm.
