Cura Nuova amid vineyards and archaeological traces

Cura Nuova combines winegrowing, local cheese production and archaeological traces. The most important points of reference are located partly in the village and partly in the surrounding area. Vineyards, cheese producers, archaeological sites and museums are therefore spread across several specific locations around Cura Nuova.

Monteregio and winegrowing

Cura Nuova is best known for the Monteregio vineyards. These are associated with the Massa Marittima DOC wine; they are located in the adjacent area of Vado all'Arancio. In the village itself, La Cura operates as an organic wine producer with 15 hectares of vineyards. For orientation regarding winegrowing, it is important to distinguish between the winery in the village and the vineyards in the adjacent area of Vado all'Arancio. The DOC wine connection also leads to Massa Marittima.

Cheese from Cura Nuova

Cheese production is also part of the local character. Saba Formaggi in Cura Nuova produces pecorino and goat cheese. Cheese production is therefore located in Cura Nuova; pecorino and goat cheese are specific products alongside winegrowing.

A stele from prehistory

Prehistory in Cura Nuova dates back to the Copper Age. An anthropomorphic stele was found in the fields of Cura Nuova. It dates from approximately 5,500 to 4,500 years ago and is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Massa Marittima. The Riparo di Vado all'Arancio was also discovered in the surrounding area in 1969. The approximate dating of the stele therefore reaches far back before the 1969 discovery. These finds give the landscape a temporal depth that extends far beyond the more recent history of winegrowing.

Poggio Castiglione and Etruscan finds

Poggio Castiglione lies a little north of Cura Nuova. Numerous Etruscan finds have been made there since the late 18th century. These finds include a bronze statuette of Heracles from the 3rd century BC; today, it is kept in the Archaeological Museum of Florence. The find site and the current place of safekeeping are therefore in different locations: Poggio Castiglione north of Cura Nuova and Florence as the museum location of the statuette.

Trekking to the Hellenistic settlement

At Poggio Castiglione, there is a restored route and an archaeological site connected with a trek to explore a Hellenistic settlement. The trek therefore has a specific archaeological connection: the route and site are associated with the exploration of this Hellenistic settlement.

Caves and mining history

The landscape around Cura Nuova includes numerous caves. The area is also connected with the Gora delle Ferriere and its importance as a major watercourse for mining operations. These two connections broaden the picture of Cura Nuova beyond wine and archaeology.
