Gavorrano between mining history and nature

Gavorrano combines evidence of its mining past with a medieval townscape and a landscape in which Monte Calvo, in the Gavorrano area, is considered a biodiversity hotspot. At the same time, Gavorrano is home to the Parco delle Colline Metallifere, which, as the Tuscan Mining Geopark, belongs to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Mining history and medieval town centre

Pozzo Roma is the landmark of the Gavorrano mine. In its town centre, Gavorrano preserves medieval buildings and structures, including the castle, arches, gates, walls, and large buildings with towers. Walking through the town therefore reveals not just individual historic buildings, but a townscape in which several elements of medieval architecture have been preserved.

Museums of geology and archaeology

The GEOMET, Museo delle Geodiversità e delle Miniere delle Colline Metallifere, presents the geology of this area of the Maremma through videos, information panels, finds, and minerals. It also explores the history of mining, from the deposits and use of geo-resources in antiquity to the closure of the mines at the end of the 20th century. The Centro di documentazione Davide Manni “Castel di Pietra” displays archaeological finds from excavations at Castel di Pietra. These excavations uncovered preserved walls and the remains of a small tower between 1997 and 2007.

The IAT tourist information office in Gavorrano provides information about local monuments and attractions, cultural events, historical and nature trails, and excursions. The IAT can also book guided visits and individually arranged tours. This is particularly relevant if you do not want to choose cultural and nature-related themes based only on individual places, but instead combine them into your own day programme.

Destinations and landscape in the surrounding area

The Rocca Pisana fortress is located near Gavorrano. The surrounding area also includes the Portus Scabris Museum, the MAGMA Museo delle Arti in Ghisa della Maremma, and the Museo di Storia Naturale. Monte d'Alma, Monte di Stella, and the summit of Monte di Muro are also located in the area around Gavorrano.

Rock setting, seating, and Mondo Marino

The Teatro delle Rocce is located in a small, semicircular quarry carved into the rock at the foot of the large San Rocco quarry and offers 2,000 seats. The Mondo Marino Zoo Aquarium is also located in the area around Gavorrano. This makes it possible to take very different interests into account when planning a trip, without presenting the individual destinations as one combined complex or shared attraction.

Explore Gavorrano by bicycle

The Gran Tour delle Colline Metallifere is an approximately 250-kilometre circular cycling route with 4,500 metres of ascent. It is intended for exploring this area by bicycle. When choosing accommodation in Gavorrano, you can therefore first decide on the focus of your trip: medieval buildings and mining history, museums and archaeology, observing the landscape, or a longer cycling tour. The different themes can help you determine the right travel rhythm without assuming a particular location or facilities for your accommodation.
