Poggio Murella: Roman Remains, Music and Local Cuisine

Poggio Murella combines archaeological remains, historic buildings, musical tradition and local food festivals. Added to this is its elevated location with far-reaching views.

Roman Remains around Poggio Murella

The Castellum Aquarum in Tuscany is associated with protected archaeological heritage status and an area of archaeological interest. The large rectangular cistern has an interior divided into ten aisles with barrel vaults. The archaeological site lies south of the built-up area of Poggio Murella. Near Poggio Murella, a Roman villa with thermal baths is also among the region’s archaeological remains.

Information boards in the village point the way to the Castellum Aquarum and explain its history. The municipality’s 2026 summer programme included an approximately two-hour guided hike from Poggio Murella to the Castellum Aquarum; reservations were required for this hike. Lasting around two hours, the guided hike can be planned as a clearly defined part of the day.

Churches, Museums and Historic Houses

A cylindrical tower from Roman times stands in the built-up area of Poggio Murella. The Chiesa di San Giuseppe was built in the mid-19th century by landowner Giuseppe Zammarchi. Its façade features a stone portal and rose window. The Museo della Banda Musicale is housed in a former washhouse. The historic museum of the Società Filarmonica “Pietro Mascagni” is located at Via Corsini 1.

The Palazzo Zammarchi south of Poggio Murella dates from the 19th century and is architecturally interesting. The exterior of Casa Focacci is adorned with columns from Roman times. Podere Le Murelle dates from the 16th century and was built on the ruins of an ancient Roman cistern. A travertine gravestone engraved in Latin is set into the wall of its external staircase.

The Philharmonic Museum houses instruments and documents belonging to Poggio Murella’s village band.

Views, Festivals and Regional Cuisine

From Poggio Murella, at an elevation of over 400 metres, the view extends from Monte Labbro and the Croce dell’Amiata across the Apennines and the lighthouse of Civitavecchia to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and Corsica.

Local cuisine includes the Sagra della Lumaca Riganella and the Sagra del Lunghino. The Sagra della Lumaca Riganella is a three-day local food festival in Poggio Murella. In addition to snails, it offers bruschette, lunghini, acquacotta and grilled meat. In 2017, the Sagra della Lumaca Riganella reached its 50th edition. Following dinner, the Sagra del Lunghino features performances by dance orchestras. Saturnia is approximately 3.5 kilometres from Poggio Murella.
