Marine Life and Prehistoric Displays
The Mondo Marino Aquarium in Valpiana is a centre for marine environmental education and the home of the SHARKS StUDIES CENTRE. Those planning to explore marine topics will find environmental education, animal and plant species, and the SHARKS StUDIES CENTRE in Valpiana. It has 37 tanks containing Mediterranean, tropical and Atlantic species. The facility is home to more than 150 animal and plant species in total. In Valpiana, Explora Dinosauri displays 20 life-size, realistic representations of dinosaurs and prehistoric fish. Marine environments and prehistoric displays therefore exist side by side in Valpiana as two distinct themes.
The History of Ironworking
The production facilities for ironworking are still visible in the town centre of Valpiana. From the 15th to the 18th century, Valpiana was an advanced centre of ironworking. Its industrial past includes the Gora delle Ferriere, an artificial canal that powered the ironworking facilities with water power. The canal is therefore directly connected to the visible production facilities in the town centre.
Museums in the Surrounding Area
The surrounding area of Valpiana is home to the MAGMA Museo delle Arti in Ghisa della Maremma, the Pinacoteca A. Modigliani, the Museo di Storia Naturale and Portus Scabris.
Hiking Route, Bus Connection and Landscape
A hiking route from Lago dell’Accesa can be continued for 4.5 km to Valpiana. The distance between the lake and the town is therefore specified with a concrete length. From Valpiana, bus services operated by Toscana Mobilità on the Follonica–Montieri route provide connections back to Massa Marittima. The 4.5 kilometres to Valpiana and the bus connection to Massa Marittima are separate sections for travel planning. Poggio al Chiecco, a mountain, is also located in the immediate vicinity of Valpiana. Ultima Spiaggia and Mirollino are beaches in the area around Valpiana. The route, mountain and beaches therefore represent different points of interest around Valpiana.
Local Events and Maremma Cuisine
The Estate Valpianese 2024 took place from 25 July to 25 August 2024 at the Centro Sociale in Valpiana and included typical Maremma menus, performances and dance evenings.
