Albiano: Historical Traces, Trails and Views

History and Historical Sites

Albiano draws attention both to its far-reaching history and to trails through the landscape. A church in Albiano dedicated to Saint Martin has been documented since 774. Until 1390, the historic church of Albiano was under the jurisdiction of the Pieve di S. Maria di Loppia. Those seeking historical connections can begin with the church and its ecclesiastical affiliation.

The old manor villa of the Mordini family in Albiano, around which the “I Cedri” agriturismo is grouped, was built in 1711 on the remains of a considerably older structure. At the historic entrance to Villa Mordini, two Lebanese cedars frame the entrance. The two trees form a matching pair of landscape and historical-cultural value. The tomb of Senator Mordini is located in the family chapel.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The CAI B2 trail runs as a circular route Barga–Catagnana–Sommocolonia–Albiano–Barga. It is classified as an easy route and leads over trails, mule tracks and roads. It passes through Albiano, a place with spectacular views over the valley. The route is 9 km long and takes approximately three hours. This circuit therefore provides a clear time frame for planning your day. The changes between trails, mule tracks and roads should be taken into account when allocating time, because the CAI trail does not run continuously over the same type of surface. The return to Barga is also relevant for timing, as the route is a circuit returning to its starting point.

The “La via della Poesia” route reaches Albiano and then follows the CAI B2 trail downhill to the village of La Moma. The “Exploring Trails” tour follows the route of the “Via della Poesia”, a cycling path of the Pro Loco di Barga. The two routes complement the B2 with different directions and means of travel. The downhill continuation to La Moma can be planned separately. If you are planning to travel on foot and by bike, you should consider these routes as separate trail itineraries.

Another circular route leads from Barga via San Pietro in Campo, Castelvecchio Pascoli, Albiano and La Moma back to Barga. It is 7.75 km long on foot and 10 km by bicycle. The two figures refer to different means of travel and should therefore be read separately. Together with the B2, this gives you specific route lengths for planning your trip.

Landscape and Trip Planning

“I Cedri” is located in Albiano amid sunny, hilly countryside with very scenic views. The estate covers 16 hectares, a large part of which is planted with olive groves and vineyards. The combination of sunny hills, views, olive groves and vineyards complements Albiano’s historical and trail-related aspects with a clear agricultural character. When choosing accommodation for your trip to Albiano, you can use these focuses as a guide: culture, hiking, cycling or landscape.
