Diecimo Among Churches and Cultural Landscapes

Diecimo combines a multifaceted local history with sacred architecture and a landscape where paths lead through olive groves. You can explore the town particularly through specific buildings, religious references and destinations in its surroundings. This creates a destination that can combine cultural interests with a peaceful appreciation of the landscape.

Churches with Their Own History

The Oratory of San Martino in Greppo is part of the cultural character of the area. It was first mentioned in an official document in 979. The building has a single rectangular hall and a semicircular apse. A nearby hospice was first mentioned in 1205; it served travelers crossing the Serchio Valley.

Diecimo is also home to the Pieve di Santa Maria a Diecimo. It has three naves and a semicircular apse. The Via Matildica del Volto Santo reaches Diecimo via the Pieve di Santa Maria. The Pieve thus combines its three-nave layout with the religious significance of the Via Matildica. With its three naves, the Pieve differs clearly in floor plan from the oratory’s single hall.

San Giovanni Leonardi and His Birthplace

The Chapel of San Giovanni Leonardi is located in his birthplace in Diecimo. San Giovanni Leonardi was born in Diecimo near Lucca in 1541. On August 8, 2006, he was declared the patron saint of pharmacists. The association’s headquarters in Giovanni Leonardi’s birthplace include a museum dedicated to him. The chapel and museum in the birthplace can be included in your travel planning together with the biography of San Giovanni Leonardi. This also allows a stay in Diecimo to be deepened through the biography of this religious figure and the place associated with him.

Palaces, Museum and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

Several palaces are located around Diecimo: Villa Reale, Villa Mansi and Villa Torrigiani. The Gabinetto di Storia Naturale, a museum, is also located in the surrounding area. Villa Reale, Villa Mansi, Villa Torrigiani and the Gabinetto di Storia Naturale can be included together in your plans around Diecimo. The different types of buildings and the natural history museum open up further cultural topics if you would like to look beyond Diecimo’s churches.

Olive Groves and Mountains

The path to the Pieve Matildica di Diecimo leads through olive groves on the valley floor. M. Moraglio, a mountain, is located in the immediate surroundings of Diecimo.
