Lugliano: Fortress, Churches and Via Romana

Lugliano combines medieval traces, ecclesiastical art and a boxwood maze with historic paths through the Lima Valley. These connections come together in the village landscape at the churches, Villa Politi and along the route of the Via Romana. As the former fortress of the Suffredinghi family, Lugliano dominates the Lima Valley and Ponte a Serraglio.

Historic Structure, Wall and Castello di Lugliano

The medieval structure of Lugliano is reflected in the route of a street that runs along the entire surrounding wall; locally, it is called „fil di cima, fil di mezzo, fil di fondo“. The street and the surrounding wall form a line through the village center. The local name follows the course of the wall in three Italian expressions.

The Castello di Lugliano is located at the highest point of the settlement. Its position at the highest point connects the castle with Lugliano's medieval structure. It is the oldest part of Lugliano. The first certain mention of the Castello di Lugliano dates from 1244.

Chiesa di San Jacopo, Oratories and Art

The Chiesa di San Jacopo Apostolo includes two oratories on the church forecourt. The Oratorio del Santissimo Nome di Gesù is located west of the Chiesa di San Jacopo in Lugliano, while the Oratorio della Natività di Maria lies east of the church.

The Chiesa di San Jacopo Apostolo also houses a polychrome terracotta Madonna and Child by Benedetto Buglioni.

Villa Politi and the Rectangular Boxwood Maze

Another specific site is Villa Politi. It contains a rectangular boxwood maze measuring 8.50 meters in width and 16 meters in length. Its length exceeds its width; the maze is therefore elongated.

Via Romana: Churches, Bridges and Pieve

The Via Romana begins with a visit to the church of Ponte a Serraglio and the church of Lugliano. The Via Romana connects churches and Pieve with preserved historic road remains. Its route follows the traces of surviving remnants of ancient roads of Roman origin, passing various still-intact bridges and medieval buildings as well as churches and Pieve. The two churches mark the beginning, while the historic remains and structures lie farther along the Via Romana.

San Jacopo Date and How to Reach Lugliano

A Mass for San Jacopo is scheduled in Lugliano for July 25.

Lugliano can be reached via the Brenner state road, shortly after crossing the Buliesima stream.
