Magliano: Mountain Village Between History and Hiking Trails

Magliano at the Foot of Monte Tea

Magliano lies at the foot of Monte Tea, between the sources of the Aulella and Serchio di Soraggio rivers. Magliano is a mountain village with narrow, paved lanes, tightly packed houses and sandstone portals.

Village Character and Early History

In the upper part of Magliano, there was a fortress in the Middle Ages. Magliano is first documented in a will dating from 793. The Monumento ai Caduti di Magliano commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars, as well as the civilian victims of the Second World War. The village landscape thus combines medieval traces with a memorial site dedicated to more recent history.

Hiking Between Magliano and Nature

On the Argegna e Tea route, a descent to the left leads to Magliano in about ten minutes. The municipality of Sillano Giuncugnano stretches between the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Tosco-Emiliano and the Parco dell’Orecchiella, inviting visitors to hike and trek in nature.

In 2025, PasseggianMangiando reached its fifth edition. The 2025 PasseggianMangiando route was an approximately 17-kilometer circular trail starting and ending in Magliano and passing by the old Mulino di Magliano. The 2026 PasseggianMangiando hike was an approximately 13-kilometer circular trail starting and ending at the Colonia di Magliano. There were six refreshment stations along this hike; the route included, among other places, the Oratorio della Madonna di Loreto. Church Art and Sacred History

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo is thought to date from the 12th century and has historical and religious significance as a sacred site. It preserves a 14th-century wooden altarpiece as well as several relics of saints. The 1739 vault painting was created by Giuseppe Morelli from Gragnola and depicts the martyrdom of Saint Andrew.

The parish church of Sant’Andrea in Magliano was reopened for services after suffering damage in the earthquake of June 21, 2013. For travelers interested in culture, the church and its surroundings combine architectural history, religious tradition and specific works of art from different centuries.

The 2025 PasseggianMangiando route passed by the old Mulino di Magliano. The Monte Tondo route also passes by the old Mulino di Magliano, which was recently converted into a residential house. Together with the lanes, sandstone portals, former fortress and Monumento ai Caduti, these places offer different points of connection for a stay combining hiking, local history and memorial culture.

The mountain setting and the routes represent movement through the landscape, while the village character, fortress and Monumento ai Caduti make Magliano’s history visible.
