Piano Di Coreglia-Ghivizzano: Castles, Churches and Pilgrimage Route

Piano Di Coreglia-Ghivizzano is best understood through its local history. Its historic core is Villa di Cistrignana, today's historic center of Piano di Coreglia. Piano di Coreglia emerged from the union of three very old fortified settlements. This brings castles, gates, churches and ancient routes into focus, making this history tangible in different forms.

Castles and Fortified Places

The castle landscape includes several historic sites. In 1185 and 1242, the castle of Villa di Cistrignana was among the most important fortresses in the Garfagnana. Nestrignana, also known as Villa di Cistrignana, had a castle and belonged to the Piviere of Loppia. The castle of Colle Bertingo played an important role in Coreglia's defense system for several centuries.

Ghivizzano: Gate, Routes and Churches

Ghivizzano is accessed through a gate with a round arch. From there, Via Piastronata leads to the town center. In the southern area of Ghivizzano Castle, Via Sossala encloses the fortified area; its vaulted ceiling is lit only by loopholes. The tower of Ghivizzano's fortifications has also been preserved.

The religious buildings round out this historical tour. The Church of San Pietro preserves well-preserved paintings and an old tabernacle. The Church of San Antonio in Ghivizzano preserves an ambo from a pulpit and a 15th-century baptismal font. The parish church of Santa Lucia was mentioned in 1260, 1276–1277 and 1387.

Festivals and Local Traditions

Piano di Coreglia's annual cultural calendar includes two fixed dates: the San Lorenzo fair takes place every year on August 10, and the Santa Lucia fair on December 13. In Ghivizzano Castello, the “Norcini a Castello” event on September 21 brought together gastronomy, music and local tradition. Religious observances and community festivities thus stand out with different focal points.

The Via Matildica del Volto Santo

If you would like to consider historic places and pilgrimage traditions together, the Via Matildica del Volto Santo offers a special frame of reference. It leads from Piano di Coreglia onward to Ghivizzano Castle and is a spiritual long-distance walking route from Mantua to Lucca. The town is therefore connected both with Ghivizzano and with the larger course of a route between Mantua and Lucca.

In Coreglia, the Museum of Plaster Figures and Emigration presents the local tradition of plaster-figure making through an extensive collection of statuettes. Together with the churches, castles and festivals, this creates a multifaceted approach to the region's history and everyday life.
