Pracando: Paper History, Villas and Trails of the Via della Carta

Pracando between Paper History and Mountain Landscapes

Pracando is a small settlement whose character is shaped by the Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte and several abandoned historic paper mills. Pracando combines the history of papermaking with the peaks and mountains in its surroundings.

The Cartiera Nardi and the History of Paper

A historic landmark is the Cartiera Nardi in Pracando. It was built in 1863 and ceased operations in the early 1970s. Its documented production period therefore represents a chapter of local paper history that is now of particular interest because of its connection with the settlement and its surroundings. Several abandoned historic paper mills also contribute to Pracando’s distinctive character. The operation of the Cartiera Nardi depended closely on the water system of the two main streams, Pescia di Collodi and Pescia di Colognola, as well as three other canalized streams.

The success of paper production at the Cartiera Nardi and in Villa Basilica is attributed to the invention in 1834 of the type of straw paper known as Cartapaglia. The inventor is considered to be the chemist and pharmacist Stefano Franchi, who came from Villa Basilica. Papermaking in Pracando is connected with the development of paper production in Villa Basilica.

Churches, Villas and Cultural Attractions

The Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte is also known as the Oratorio di Pracando and is part of the catalogued cultural heritage. Together with the abandoned paper mills, it shapes the cultural identity of the small settlement. The surrounding area is also home to the Villa Torrigiani palace, the Villa Mansi palace and the Villa Reale palace. The Villa Torrigiani Museum is likewise located nearby. For those interested in culture, the main points of interest are therefore the Cartiera Nardi, the paper mills and the Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte.
